Golf course living in Edina, Minnesota
Early in the morning, dew settles on the freshly cut grass at Interlachen Country Club. In Edina's Rolling Green and Hilldale neighborhoods, known for their multi-million-dollar homes and large lot sizes, living room windows look out onto putting greens and sand traps. "These neighborhoods are really close — and sometimes the housing is even on beautiful golf courses that provide beautiful views and potential memberships," says Debbie McNally of Sotheby's International, who's been working in Minnesota real estate for the past two decades. "For the golfers, there's lots of opportunity in Edina," she adds, mentioning Meadowbrook, a public-use course directly north of the neighborhood. Cattails border Meadowbrook Lake and trails meander through the marshland. In the words of Chad Larsen of Coldwell Banker, "Rolling Green/ Hilldale is the premier neighborhood in Edina. From when it was originally developed in the '50s it has remained an elevated neighborhood with a consistency for having high-quality homes." Although country clubs and parks provide plenty of peace and quiet, save for the occasional thwack of a golf club, shopping options aren't more than 5 minutes away along Interlachen Boulevard. And Minneapolis is a 10-mile commute north, connecting the neighborhood to city lights, museums and restaurants.
Multi-million dollar estates with circular driveways
In Rolling Green/Hilldale, sale prices start around $1.4 million for mid-century ranch-styles and sometimes reach close to $5 million for 10,000-square-foot estates complete with luxury amenities like home movie theaters and heated in-ground swimming pools. Prospective buyers will find Tudor, French-inspired and contemporary properties with grand entryways and golf course views. It's not uncommon for lot sizes here to surpass an acre, and teams of landscapers cut lawns with riding mowers. "Throughout Edina – especially West Edina – people flood their backyards and have their own skating rinks," notes McNally. Decades-old oak trees shade circular driveways, and joggers and dog walkers acknowledge one another on morning runs before work.

French restaurants and historic movie theaters in the 50th & France Commercial District
In Rolling Green/Hilldale, it takes less than 5 minutes to drive to Jerry's Foods for grocery runs or folks can stop by Walgreens, the UPS Store or Starbucks in the same plaza. Lunds & Byerlys offers shelves of fresh produce in the 50th & France Street Commercial District, about 2 miles away. Here, brick storefronts date back to the 1930s and there's a mix of boutiques and upscale chains — from Lush to Lululemon — in addition to restaurants. For dinner, McNally recommends Salut. "It has a French underpinning, but it has a wide-ranging menu," she says. And when the weather heats up, diners can enjoy moules frites and fresh-shucked oysters with white wine under sidewalk umbrellas. Further down the block, Red Cow serves gourmet burgers topped with candied bacon and melted manchego. Or, after dinner, head to a movie at the historic Edina Mann Theatre, which was built in 1934, or visit Edina Creamery for a cone. There are more retail options located north of Meadowbrook Park on Excelsior Boulevard; like SolSta Records which has vintage vinyls, CDs and magazines, or Hold the Wheat where they serve up gluten-free baked goods.

Ice rinks, golf courses and playground equipment
Rolling Green/Hilldale is surrounded by golf course lawns and Minnesota wildlife. To the south, there are multi-use fields, tennis courts and a seasonal skating rink in Highlands Park. "Ice skating is essential here," says McNally, and hockey players frequent this rink or the rink at Interlachen Park. There's a small climbing wall at the nearby playground and basketball hoops for pickup games after school. The Interlachen Country Club is membership-only, and yearly fees grant access to a swimming pool, tennis courts and upscale dining rooms with three-course tasting menus. The golf course famously hosted the U.S. Open in 1930 and also served as the site of tournaments like the Walker Cup and the Junior Ryder Cup over the past two decades. At Meadowbrook Golf Club, which is open to the public, fees operate on a per-hole basis.

Fourth of July sprints and annual art fairs
On the Fourth of July, runners line up in the morning for The Edina Dash, a three-quarter of a mile race, while homemade floats park outside Edina City Hall in preparation for the parade, and the day finishes with a fireworks show at Rosland Park. McNally also points to the Edina Art Fair at the end of spring, where dozens of vendors sell their wares from outdoor booths. "It's amazing," she says. "The variety of art is just extraordinary and it's ranked number one in the Twin Cities." Residents also look forward to the Edina Car Show in September; dancing in Nolan Mains Plaza on select nights throughout the summer; and an event called "Llamas on the Plaza" in the fall. Further south, Centennial Lakes Park hosts a Winter Ice Festival when the water freezes over, and there's also a free concert series throughout June, July and August.

Minneapolis in 10 miles, Saint Paul in 20
"It's not a cut-through neighborhood, meaning there's only a few ways in or out," explains Larsen. Residential streets remain quiet throughout the day, and the CAP crime score rests at 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.
