Retail-rich neighborhood features mainly condominiums and townhomes
If you at least like to window shop ’til you drop, then Southdale is worth checking out. When Victor Gruen designed the namesake mall in the 50s, he envisioned a neighborhood that would grow around it to include a medical center, a public library and visually appealing community spaces. That vision largely came to fruition and the upscale Galleria Edina was added across the street in the 70s. Today, Southdale is a retail-rich neighborhood where residents like to see and be seen. Given the commercial nature of Southdale, housing is mostly found in condominium and townhouse form. But there is variety within that genre and walkability is high. “With so many nearby amenities within walking distance, this neighborhood has one of the highest walk scores in Edina,” says Realtor John Wanninger with Sotheby’s. “Buses also run on most residential streets, if you prefer public transportation.”

This retail community is heavily blanketed with condominium and townhouse options
The median price is $155,000 and is strongly associated with mid-century condominiums. Inside these units, you’ll find around 700 to 1,000 square feet of living space, but as you get closer to the $170,000 price range arrangements can be around 1,300 square feet. Condo complexes can be surrounded by carpeted lawns and mature shade trees, giving an established feel to the area. Some of these can be limited to a dozen units, while relatively newer complexes, like the Point of France built in 1976, feature over 100 units. Luxury condominium units are available at the Westin Edina Galleria, a condo-hotel living arrangement where residents can access Westin Hotel’s amenities, such as 24-hour room service, housekeeping, concierge services and spa passes. Units here start at $450,000.

Getting around town is made easy for shoppers, diners and spectators
Southdale’s layout is fairly simple, with shorter residential streets branching off from main thoroughfares such as Francis Avenue, making it easy to reach dining and retail destinations quickly. The namesake Southdale Center is where residents congregate when they want a sense of community. Big names like Apple fill the mall, but so do amenities like the Southdale branch of the Hennepin County Library system. An AMC movie theater keeps visitors entertained, and popular chains like Shake Shack offer up quick and trendy eats. Galleria Edina has contemporary décor inside, and upscale retailers like Louis Vuitton. Likewise, the attached eateries are refined, such as Pittsburgh Blue, where steaks are served in a dimly lit setting. You’ll find everyday conveniences clustered together outside the mall, like Walgreens, CVS and the Cub Foods grocery store.
