An Edina neighborhood bordered by Highway 100 and Minnehaha Creek
In Todd Park, a northwest Edina neighborhood less than 10 miles from Minneapolis, the sound of cars from Highway 100 mingles with the gentle gurgle of Minnehaha Creek. Kids explore the banks in search of crayfish and arrowheads, and boardwalks cut through the cattail marshes in Meadowbrook Park. It’s a careful blend of freshly poured concrete and Minnesota wildlife, and the neighborhood’s namesake park provides an open space for baseball practice and pick-up hockey come wintertime. According to Debbie McNally of Sothebey’s International: ice skating is “essential” here, and some West Edina residents even flood their backyards to make rinks when the weather drops below freezing. In the summer, golfers tee off at Meadowbrook Golf Course and members enjoy the upscale amenities at Edina Country Club or the Interlachen Country Club. In general, according to McNally, “People are really committed to their neighborhood.” This strong sense of community persists in the 50th & France shopping district, where there’s dancing in the plaza on Friday nights in the summer or at neighborhood bars like The Hilltop, which some locals say has an atmosphere like the set of “Cheers.”

Condo options, historic homes and new construction
Mid-century ranch-styles, split-levels and Colonial-inspired homes occupy the sloped streets of Todd Park, with sale prices typically falling between $400,000 and $700,000. Bungalows and Tudor-inspired homes dating back to the 1920s can also sell for around $700,000. John T. Wanninger, the leader of the JTW Partners Group at Lakes Sotheby’s Edina, says new construction is on the rise. “These homes start in the $1.2 million range and proceed upwards from there,” he says, adding, “Most of these high-end, new construction homes are located on the western edge of the neighborhood,” and feature grand porticos, steep gables and decorative dormer windows. It’s not uncommon to see basketball hoops in long driveways. Todd Park’s CAP Index crime score is a 2 out of 10 — lower than the national average of 4 — and neighbors post regularly on platforms like Nextdoor and “Buy Nothing,” warning of fox sightings or asking after lost items.

A town center with a European flair
Before merging onto Highway 100, commuters en route to Minneapolis can stop by the Caribou Coffee drive-thru. Nearby, Jerry’s Foods is the local favorite for groceries and The Hilltop serves classic bar fare like chicken wings and pretzels with beer cheese. Starling, found just across the highway, is a new upscale eatery that combines global flavors to create menu items like Balinese fried rice and a Moroccan seafood boil. The 50th & France shopping district, generally considered the city’s downtown, is less than 2 miles from Todd Park past the Edina Country Club. “It’s hard to find real downtowns in America these days,” says Rebecca Sorensen, Executive Director at 50th & France. “People in this area really go out of their way to shop local. That’s one of the reasons why we’re able to have such an active downtown. It’s almost like being in Europe: we have a meat store, a specialty olive oil store, we have places for gift-giving, bridal gowns and hair salons.” Fashion Avenue is one of the district’s most popular stops, a second-hand clothing store that stocks vintage Couture. There’s a dramatic shift in the summer months, when restaurants like Salut and Pajarito section off sidewalks for outdoor dining, and kids park their bicycles outside Edina Creamery.

Year-round, free events in 50th & France district
The Edina Theatre, recognizable on 50th Street for its 1930s-era marquee, was restored in the wake of the Pandemic. “The Mann family bought the theater, and the city of Edina added COVID relief funding,” says Sorensen, noting that the movie theater also has a gold bar inside designed to look like the ballroom from Kubrick’s “The Shining.” In September, the Edina Car Show — still in its infancy — draws people from all over the Midwest, and 50th & France brings llamas onto the plaza in the fall. “Winter we always have saunas and look at how we can activate our plaza with public art experiences,” says Sorensen, adding, “There are events all year-round.” Visitors celebrate the beginning of summer at the Edina Art Fair, which takes place over three days near the beginning of June, and high school bands march down 50th Street for the city’s Fourth of July Parade.
