Condo options, historic homes and new construction
Mid-century ranch-styles, split-levels and Colonial-inspired homes occupy the sloped streets of Todd Park, with sale prices typically falling between $400,000 and $700,000. Bungalows and Tudor-inspired homes dating back to the 1920s can also sell for around $700,000. John T. Wanninger, the leader of the JTW Partners Group at Lakes Sotheby’s Edina, says new construction is on the rise. “These homes start in the $1.2 million range and proceed upwards from there,” he says, adding, “Most of these high-end, new construction homes are located on the western edge of the neighborhood,” and feature grand porticos, steep gables and decorative dormer windows. It’s not uncommon to see basketball hoops in long driveways. Todd Park’s CAP Index crime score is a 2 out of 10 — lower than the national average of 4 — and neighbors post regularly on platforms like Nextdoor and “Buy Nothing,” warning of fox sightings or asking after lost items.A town center with a European flair
Before merging onto Highway 100, commuters en route to Minneapolis can stop by the Caribou Coffee drive-thru. Nearby, Jerry’s Foods is the local favorite for groceries and The Hilltop serves classic bar fare like chicken wings and pretzels with beer cheese. Starling, found just across the highway, is a new upscale eatery that combines global flavors to create menu items like Balinese fried rice and a Moroccan seafood boil. The 50th & France shopping district, generally considered the city’s downtown, is less than 2 miles from Todd Park past the Edina Country Club. “It’s hard to find real downtowns in America these days,” says Rebecca Sorensen, Executive Director at 50th & France. “People in this area really go out of their way to shop local. That’s one of the reasons why we’re able to have such an active downtown. It’s almost like being in Europe: we have a meat store, a specialty olive oil store, we have places for gift-giving, bridal gowns and hair salons.” Fashion Avenue is one of the district’s most popular stops, a second-hand clothing store that stocks vintage Couture. There’s a dramatic shift in the summer months, when restaurants like Salut and Pajarito section off sidewalks for outdoor dining, and kids park their bicycles outside Edina Creamery.Study abroad opportunities through the Edina Rotary Global Scholars Program
Families in Todd Park enjoy access to Edina’s highly-rated public school system, where schools like Highlands Elementary and Southview Middle earn A grades from the educational review site Niche. The final stop in the public-school pipeline is Edina High, after which upwards of 80% of students attend four-year colleges. EHS is known as the home of the Edina Rotary Global Scholars Program, through which students can pursue study-abroad experiences. Eleventh and 12th graders present capstone projects during their final year in the program. EHS also has close to 30 non-athletic extracurriculars to choose from, including everything from a championship-winning robotics team to Breakfast Book Club.Warming houses and golf club options
Kids bundle up in the Todd Park warming house before heading out onto the seasonal ice rink. Paved trails encircle a baseball field and basketball court, and there are also walking paths in Meadowbrook Park to the north. Fishermen try their luck at the piers beside Meadowbrook Lake, home to largemouth bass and common carp. Next door, Meadowbrook Golf Clubs has leagues and lessons open to the public, and Interlachen Country Club’s history dates back to the early 1900s. Other golfers invest in memberships at Edina Country, which borders Highway 100 to the east. A statue of Humpty Dumpty sits reading at the center of Grandview Square Park, greeting visitors to the Edina Library and Senior Center. Downtown Minneapolis, home to large-scale event venues like the U.S. Bank Stadium and the Target Center, is about 10 miles — less than 20 minutes — from Todd Park via Highway 100 and Interstate 394. Although there are several bus stops along 50th Street and METRO lines running north into the city, it can take over an hour to commute using public transit. Saint Paul is about 20 miles — just over 30 minutes — east along Interstate 94. From the Twin Cities’ international airport, fly direct to over 160 unique destinations, domestic and abroad. Directly north of Meadowbrook Park, Methodist Hospital has expertise in over 50 fields, including cancer care and neurosciences.Year-round, free events in 50th & France district
The Edina Theatre, recognizable on 50th Street for its 1930s-era marquee, was restored in the wake of the Pandemic. “The Mann family bought the theater, and the city of Edina added COVID relief funding,” says Sorensen, noting that the movie theater also has a gold bar inside designed to look like the ballroom from Kubrick’s “The Shining.” In September, the Edina Car Show — still in its infancy — draws people from all over the Midwest, and 50th & France brings llamas onto the plaza in the fall. “Winter we always have saunas and look at how we can activate our plaza with public art experiences,” says Sorensen, adding, “There are events all year-round.” Visitors celebrate the beginning of summer at the Edina Art Fair, which takes place over three days near the beginning of June, and high school bands march down 50th Street for the city’s Fourth of July Parade.
