Sunny mountain vibes
More than a century ago, El Granada was intended to become a resort town akin to Atlantic City, but the idea faltered when a planned rail line extension failed to materialize. In preparation for the resorts that never came, the town was laid out in a distinctive semi-circular grid decked out with tree-lined streets. Today, it has about 5,500 residents, lots of houses and a smattering of shops and restaurants. It's also typically warmer and sunnier than the towns that surround it because its hillsides help break up the dense fog. “It’s known as the banana belt because it gets more sunshine than nearby areas. It’s the first place to clear when the fog rolls out,” says Realtor Barbara LaVey of Coldwell Banker Realty, a longtime Bay Area resident.

Surfing, hiking, and more
Residents can take advantage of a trove of parks and beaches in the area. The town has a famed surf spot, Maverick’s Beach, where big wave surfers can be seen carving up colossal pipelines. For stunning sunsets, locals and visitors pack their beach blankets and picnic baskets and head to Surfer’s Beach. For more sightseeing, hikers make the short trek up to the heights of Pillar Point Bluff, a ragged cliffside overlook that shows off the enormity of the deep blue Pacific. Hikers can also head east into the lush woodlands of nearby Montara Mountain and Rancho Corral de Tierra, both of which feature interconnected trails that fan out across forested hillsides and peaks.

A variety of styles - all with a view
The town's curved, hilly streets are lined with lots of greenery, tall trees and palms. Homes are often built into the hillsides with excellent views of natural scenery and the dark blue Pacific waters. “Anywhere you are in El Granada, you can see the ocean,” LaVey says. There are an eclectic mix of home styles on display from renovated ranch homes and bungalows built in the 1940s and 50s to California Craftsman homes and luxury moderns. Some of the newer homes feature vaulted, wood-beam ceilings and walls of glass windows facing the ocean. “It’s a hodge podge of different housing styles,” LaVey says. Home prices can range from $1.2 million for smaller, older homes to more than $3 million for larger, contemporary homes.

Locally sourced seafood in abundance
El Granada and Princeton-By-The-Sea may be small, but there's no shortage of food and drink here. For a cozy Italian meal, locals can stop by Mezza Luna, a longstanding establishment with locally sourced produce and seafood. There's also La Costanera, a contemporary Peruvian bistro that features the rich culinary talents of chef Carlos Altamirano, the purveyor of several other acclaimed restaurants in the Bay Area. For grocery and everyday essentials, residents' shop at Spangler’s Market, a family-owned market with a deli, butchery and fresh produce just a few blocks from the oceanfront. For fresh seafood, Pillar Point Harbor is the spot to be — fisherman sell live crab right off the boat.
