Norwood Cherrylee
Houses through the decades, with a wide range of prices
Some of the oldest homes in Norwood Cherrylee are early 20th-century bungalows, and the newest are 2020s contemporaries or custom homes. Most common, however, are ranch-style homes from the 1940s through the 1960s. Prices for single-family homes are typically in the $600,000s to over $1 million. "You could pay a million dollars for a place, and you sometimes get bigger lots, but it depends," says Aguilar. She says multiunit properties with large lots are a versatile option for those who find them: "They'll buy one unit to live in and rent out the rest." Condos and townhouses, many of which date to the 1980s, have sold in the $200,000s to $600,000s. Residences on the neighborhood's west side will be closest to the San Gabriel Valley Airport, a general aviation facility. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works has a noise mitigation program that limits activities during certain times of day. There are diverse stores and restaurants along Peck Road
Peck Road is a retail corridor with numerous restaurants and an array of cuisines, from Vietnamese and Indian to Cuban and Burmese. Xécora Gastronomía Urbana specializes in indigenous Mexican dishes. Northgate Market, Superior Grocers and a Sam's Club are close by. Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park Medical Center, one of the biggest hospitals in the area, is about 4 miles away. It's less than 2 miles from Norwood Cherrylee to downtown El Monte. "Downtown is considered to be where the Valley Mall is; it's a historic area," says Aguilar. The area was established as an open-air mall in the 1960s and is a commercial strip rather than a traditional mall. There are lots of stores and restaurants to choose from, and there are a variety of events that bring the community to Main Street throughout the year. The El Monte Farmers Market is also held here on Thursdays from March through October.Lambert Park has a community center with a gym and hosts events
Lambert Park has a community center, playground, fields and courts that are often used by youth sports groups, like Little League teams. The Lambert Park Gymnasium offers open gym hours multiple days a week. The park has hosted a Tiny Tots program, winter break activities like crafts, games and sports and Dr. Suess Day in February. Mulhern Field is the home of the El Monte Fillies, a girls' competitive softball team established in 1972. East of Norwood Cherrylee, the San Gabriel River Trail is part of the Emerald Necklace Greenway. A couple of miles north of the neighborhood, on Mungi Lake, the Peck Road Water Conservation Park has multiuse trails, horseshoe pits and fishing spots. The Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area, about 6 miles away, has a 70-acre lake for fishing and water sports, a nature center, trails and campsites. There are plenty of ways to get around in El Monte
Foothill Transit and LA Metro buses run in El Monte, as does the Metro Micro, an on-demand rideshare. The city also has a fixed-route transportation service and a commuter shuttle. Metrolink light-rail service is available from El Monte Station. The east side of the neighborhood is closest to Interstate 605, so people living there may experience noise issues. Interstate 10 is to the south. The trip to Los Angeles International Airport, also known as LAX, is about 33 miles.A variety of primary schools feed into Arroyo High School
Various public schools serve the area. Durfee School, for transitional kindergarten through eighth grade, earns a B-plus grade from Niche and offers Spanish dual language immersion. Cherrylee School, which goes through sixth grade, receives a B. These cover a large portion of the area east of Peck Road. West of Peck is zoned to several other schools, including LeGore School, which enrolls fourth through sixth graders and receives a B-plus. Students may move on to Arroyo High School, which has an A-minus and is known for award-winning arts and music programs.
