Historic charm meets contemporary convenience
Some communities are proud to tout their legacy with a single historic district in some or most of the neighborhood. In Northeast Elgin, locals may live in one of two: the Spring/Douglas Historic District, where many of the Colonial Revival houses that gave Douglas Avenue the nickname of “Fashionable Avenue” in the 1880s are still standing today, and the D.C. Cook/Lovell Area Historic District, where quirky Queen Anne homes are bound to catch the eye. The architectural charms of old may be plentiful here, but folks living in the present can appreciate the Latino restaurants and independent shops along Dundee Road on the neighborhood’s east side and quick connections to downtown Elgin and Interstate 90.
Colonial Revival and Queen Anne homes
Various traditional and picturesque homes make Northeast Elgin a treat for fans of early American architectural styles. Minimal traditional and Colonial Revival homes are common, but details like original hardwood flooring from the 1900s and gambrel roofs set homes here apart from later-developed areas to the east. Craftsman bungalows in the area tend to have classic style hallmarks like dormer windows, brick exteriors and side-gabled roofs with visible stickwork. Eagle-eyed buyers may find ornate Queen Anne-styled homes with distinctive features like turrets, wraparound porches and complex roof lines. As-is sales and properties needing updates or upkeep range from $140,000 to $230,000. Turnkey homes start around $240,000 and top out near the $430,000 mark.
A few multi-unit homes round out the neighborhood’s inventory. Most of these properties are converted houses from the early 1900s, with two to three units included. Values range from $200,000 to $470,000.
Northeast Elgin homes come in a wide variety of architectural styles.

Following the trail south, Slade Avenue Park is a small area with a boat launch and fishing area along the river. The entrance signs at St. Francis Park indicate it as the former home of St. Joseph Hospital. Today, the pocket park has a play area, basketball hoops, a tennis courts and a small synthetic turf soccer field surrounded by a tall fence to prevent shots above goal from flying out of play.
