North West Elk Grove is a sprawling suburb south of Sacramento
North West Elk Grove is a suburban community where residents live in contemporary homes, walk to community parks and shop and dine close to home. It includes several planned communities, the Valley Hi Country Club and a large Apple distribution center. Bound by Elk Grove Creek in the north and Elk Grove Boulevard in the south, it’s only a stones throw from the countryside and 15 miles from Downtown Sacramento.
Elk Grove is one of the fastest growing and most diverse cities in California. Its population has skyrocketed over the last 30 years, expanding from 17,000 residents in 1990 to more than 170,000 in 2020. North West Elk Grove was among the city’s earliest expansions, with thousands of new homes built in the late 80’s and 90’s. “My husband and I moved here when it was just a little farm town, and it’s grown tremendously. Now, you really don’t ever have to leave. You can get anything you need without getting on the highway,” says Realtor Traci Petersen of Coldwell Banker Realty.

With more than a dozen community parks, green space is a prominent feature of the neighborhood. “We’ve got LED lights for all our parks and street lighting now. It’s so lit up. You feel really safe walking around at night. In the summer, you’ll see people playing in the parks even after dark,” Petersen says. Johnson Park is among the largest, with three baseball diamonds, tennis courts, a playground and walking paths crisscrossing its grassy meadows. There’s also the Barbara Morse Wackford Community & Aquatic Complex, a sprawling indoor and outdoor facility with two swimming pools, a skate park, a gym and a teen center. Just a few blocks away, the Elk Grove Creek Trail winds along the water’s edge for 7 miles, offering runners, walkers and cyclists a place to get some exercise. Avid golfers can book an early-morning tee time at Valley Hi Country Club, a private, 18-hole course with a clubhouse that doubles as an idyllic wedding venue.
