North West Elk Grove is a sprawling suburb south of Sacramento
North West Elk Grove is a suburban community where residents live in contemporary homes, walk to community parks and shop and dine close to home. It includes several planned communities, the Valley Hi Country Club and a large Apple distribution center. Bound by Elk Grove Creek in the north and Elk Grove Boulevard in the south, it’s only a stones throw from the countryside and 15 miles from Downtown Sacramento.
Elk Grove is one of the fastest growing and most diverse cities in California. Its population has skyrocketed over the last 30 years, expanding from 17,000 residents in 1990 to more than 170,000 in 2020. North West Elk Grove was among the city’s earliest expansions, with thousands of new homes built in the late 80’s and 90’s. “My husband and I moved here when it was just a little farm town, and it’s grown tremendously. Now, you really don’t ever have to leave. You can get anything you need without getting on the highway,” says Realtor Traci Petersen of Coldwell Banker Realty.
Homebuyers will find a mix of upscale, contemporary homes
Most homes in the neighborhood were built between the late 1980s and today. Contemporary, Mediterranean Revival and Traditional style homes are the most common designs here, although some bungalow and ranch styles as well. These homes are within planned communities like Laguna Creek, Laguna West and Sheldon Terrace. Well-maintained sidewalks, landscaped lawns and lots of leafy trees adorn the streets. A handful of townhomes, condos and senior living communities are also available. Prices range from around $500,000 to $1.2 million, depending on the size of the home. Nearly 70% of the community’s residents are homeowners.
Community parks, swimming pools and a country club
With more than a dozen community parks, green space is a prominent feature of the neighborhood. “We’ve got LED lights for all our parks and street lighting now. It’s so lit up. You feel really safe walking around at night. In the summer, you’ll see people playing in the parks even after dark,” Petersen says. Johnson Park is among the largest, with three baseball diamonds, tennis courts, a playground and walking paths crisscrossing its grassy meadows. There’s also the Barbara Morse Wackford Community & Aquatic Complex, a sprawling indoor and outdoor facility with two swimming pools, a skate park, a gym and a teen center. Just a few blocks away, the Elk Grove Creek Trail winds along the water’s edge for 7 miles, offering runners, walkers and cyclists a place to get some exercise. Avid golfers can book an early-morning tee time at Valley Hi Country Club, a private, 18-hole course with a clubhouse that doubles as an idyllic wedding venue.
Students attend highly rated schools in the Elk Grove Unified School District
There are seven elementary schools in the neighborhood, including Elliott Ranch Elementary, Stone Lake Elementary, Joseph Sims Elementary, Foulks Ranch Elementary, Marlon Mix Elementary, John Ehrhardt Elementary and Elitha Donner Elementary. All of them earn B-plus ratings or higher from Niche. The next steps are A-minus-rated Harriet G. Eddy Middle School or A-rated Elizabeth Pinkerton Middle School, depending on what side of the neighborhood students live. The final four years are spent at Laguna Creek High School, which gets an A-minus rating. The high school offers a wide range of academic and extracurricular options, from its Green Energy Technology Academy to its award-winning marching band.
Getting around Elk Grove and Sacramento via State Route 99 and Interstate 5
State Route 99 is situated along the east edge of the neighborhood, while Interstate 5 is accessible in the west. “It’s a great location because you’re right in the middle between Interstate 5 and Route 99. That’ll really cut down on your commute time,” Petersen says. It’s about 15 miles from Downtown Sacramento. Many of the neighborhood’s residential streets are walkable, but most residents will need a car to get to shops and restaurants. The Sacramento Regional Transit District operates several bus lines in the area for those who require public transportation. Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center, the nearest major hospital, is about 6 miles away.
There’s plenty of shopping and dining in the neighborhood
Shopping plazas are situated along the neighborhood’s busier streets, with plenty of options for dining and groceries. Sprouts Farmers Market, Trader Joe’s, Costco and Target are all located within the community. “We’re really lucky to have so many grocery stores. A lot of them have specialty items that you’d otherwise have to travel for,” Petersen says. Restaurants include everything from major chains to locally owned eateries like Sizzling Fresh Mongolian BBQ and Chopan Kabob, known for its authentic Afghan cuisine. Fans of Mediterranean fare will find what they’re looking for at Salsal Kabob & Gyro Grill. There’s also the Cinemark Century Laguna 16 for the latest Hollywood movie.
