Rural living in the Charleston countryside
Along the banks of the curving Elk River and 15 miles northeast of Charleston, Elkview is a rural community with plenty of outdoor recreation and a friendly, know-your-neighbor vibe. “It’s a fairly big community as far as the amount of people but it still has a small-town feel,” says Kelly Moles, a Realtor at eXp Realty and a resident of Elkview. “If you’re moving in from out of state and you don’t know anybody, someone on your street is probably going to come and bring you brownies.” Though a little ways from downtown, Elkview has a few shopping and dining spots of its own, such as The Huskey Den and a weekend flea market colloquially called The Elkview Mall. Elkview draws people who want access to the city while enjoying the larger lots and homes of countryside living. “Homes in Elkview sell before they even list,” says Moles. “The demand is so much greater than the supply.”

Ranch-style homes and DIY farmhouses
Winding roads lead to homes with sprawling lawns dotted with maples and pines. Moles describes the neighborhood as tight-knit and anchored by a strong sense of community. “Everybody lines the street when the softball team makes it to state— there’s a parade to wish them well,” she says. “People that don’t have kids still attend football, basketball, volleyball and soccer games. You know, you don’t normally see that.” Homes are spaced far apart, with ranch-style, split levels and Colonial Revivals sprinkled throughout. “It's mostly either mid-entry and traditional colonial, or like a farmhouse that your grandpa built with no blueprints,” says Moles, explaining how some homes come with additions originally made to accommodate growing families. Prices typically range from $150,000 to $350,000, while the average lot size hovers around half an acre. Homes typically sell after one day on the market, compared to the U.S. average of 44 days.

From Coonskin Park to a lively community center
About 7 miles west of the neighborhood, Coonskin Park is a 1,000-acre riverside spot with a web of nature trails through woodlands, a playground, a golf course, an Olympic-size pool and a fishing pond. The park also hosts minor-league professional soccer at Schoenbaum Stadium, an in-park amphitheater with a capacity of 3,000. Also within the park is The Grotto, a half-mile trail trek that leads to a cave with a waterfall along Coonskin Branch, a tributary of the Elk River. Closer to home, the Elk River Community Center is a gathering spot with fitness classes, educational workshops and “a pretty hopping senior center, too,” says Moles. “They serve lunch to seniors every day, and they have a gym that’s free to the public. There are some pool tables, so the old men will get together and shoot pool.” The center also includes a small thrift shop.

Groceries, shopping and Appalachian dining
Though downtown Charleston has wider choices for dining, Elkview has a few restaurants within the neighborhood. Elkview Chinese Restaurant is a popular spot housed in a white brick building on a rural roadside. The Husky Den, located on Main Street, is a sports-themed restaurant dedicated to Elkview’s athletes. “Everything on the menu is named after former or current coaches for different sports,” says Moles. “The whole place is decorated with sports memorabilia. They have 1970s pom poms and a letterman’s jacket from the high school on the wall.” The Den serves elevated fast food with a bit of a West Virginian twist. “It’s very Appalachian— like fried bologna sandwiches, burgers with jalapenos and onions rings, that kind of thing.” For groceries, Elkview Market is located within the Elk Shopping Plaza. On the weekends, the Elkview Park and Ride transit lot transforms into a flea market. “Some people call that the Elkview Mall,” says Moles. “You can go to the park and ride and buy anything from produce to flags for your porch, furniture, or a four-wheeler.”
