A classic small town in Chautauqua County
Ellington, a rural town of around 1,400 residents along the eastern border of Chautauqua County, exudes small-town charm. The hamlet of Ellington, the town's residential hub, offers a small walkable town center and a tight-knit community, while the rest of town consists of acres of woodland and farmland on the cusp of New York State's Amish Country. Established in 1824, Ellington offers a slower pace of life, where residents attend Sunday morning worship services at a tiny white church, kids run around the town park across the street and others walk to the post office to drop off a letter. Local farm stands are often closer than the nearest grocery store, and town gatherings attract nearly virtually everyone in the vicinity. "It's very much small-town easy living around here," says Rachel Willow, a licensed real estate salesperson with five years of industry experience with Howard Hanna.
Downtown Randolph has many shops and locally owned restaurants is just up the road from Ellington.

Local green spaces and community events
While rolling woodlands and winding creeks surround Ellington, the town has just one park. Ellington Town Park, located in the heart of the hamlet, features a playground, a blacktop area and a tiny covered pavilion with a flagpole. Each spring, the park comes alive with the annual Easter Egg Hunt, and families gather again for live music throughout the summer. Residents also take pride in their town-wide Spring Clean Up Day.
As the sun peaks in the height of the summer, Ellington shines during the annual town picnic on the first weekend of August. This three-day event features a woodcutting contest, cake auction, pet show and a horseshoe tournament, with live music and fireworks displays to end the night. The town shifts indoors in the winter with cozy events like the local craft show and Christmas auction.
Just beyond town, Ellington residents can explore thousands of acres of public land at Harris Hill State Forest and Hatch Creek State Forest. Both spots are popular destinations for hiking, fishing, camping and hunting. In the winter, recreation takes on a more snow-themed feel. "You have snowmobile trails, skiing, snowboarding and ice-fishing," says Heather Chase, a real estate salesperson with ERA Real Estate, who grew up in the area. The nearby Ellington Rod & Gun Club is another well-known gathering spot. This members-only club also boasts a small restaurant with occasional live music.
The Ellington Fire Department is a locally staffed volunteer fire company protecting the farms and homes in the area.

Recreation on Chautauqua Lake
Public boat ramps, lakeside beaches and other green spaces dot the banks of Chautauqua Lake, less than 20 miles away. "Chautauqua is best known for the lake and year-round recreation," Willow says. "But many of our lakefront communities are seasonal." The Chautauqua Institution is one of those seasonal communities, but unlike others, it attracts over 100,000 visitors every summer. "It was originally founded as a Methodist Sunday School retreat to promote adult learning," Chase says. "But today, it offers everything from thought-provoking seminars and history classes to yoga sessions and live performances." The nine-week Institution calendar attracts lifelong learners and leaders from all over the country.
