Cheese curds and quiet living are facts of life in Ellsworth
Ellsworth is a quintessential Wisconsin town, right down to its fondness for cheese curds. Although its most famous product is available nationwide on grocery store shelves, it is home to just about 3,500 residents. “It’s a quiet little village out in Pierce County. The county fair is actually held out there,” says Realtor Jason Neuhaus of Coldwell Banker Burnet. “Homes there tend to be a little smaller and more affordable, although the prices have really jumped lately just because of how low they started. Other than that, there really isn’t much out there except the cheese curd factory.”

Historic houses and new construction mix in Ellsworth
Ellsworth’s founding dates to 1862, and housing styles on the shady residential streets reflect this. “There are quite a few homes, especially in the village itself, that have some historic charm to them,” Neuhaus says. “We’re talking about farmhouses and Queen Annes built in the 1950s or earlier, and a good number from the years between 1900 and 1920. There has been some new development, too, especially with the influx of people moving from Minnesota to Wisconsin.” This new construction has brought Modern Traditional homes to Ellsworth, adding to a mix that includes midcentury ranch-style houses and bungalows with Craftsman features. Investment properties can sell for as little as $50,000. However, prices for move-in ready homes typically range from around $200,000 to almost $800,000, depending on lot size, square footage, build year and number of bedrooms.
New streets in Ellsworth feature tidy New Traditional homes and friendly blocks.

Career and technical education expands at Ellsworth High
The village is served by the Ellsworth Community School District, which earns an overall B from Niche. Ellsworth Elementary, Ellsworth Middle and Ellsworth Community High Schools all receive B grades. In April 2024, a referendum was approved to allow for an update of the high school's athletic facilities. This construction will also improve the school's career and technical education offerings. As of April 2025, roughly half of the expected work had been completed.

Annual festival celebrates squeaky local specialty
In addition to hosting the Pierce County Fair, Ellsworth is famous for a local specialty. "It’s the home of the Ellsworth Cheese Curd Festival, which happens early in summer,” Neuhaus says. “The Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery is based in Ellsworth, and those curds are famous. Every time I’m there, I stop and grab a couple of bags of the bacon-flavored cheese curds, and they’re the kind that are so fresh they squeak in your mouth.” The annual festival celebrates these squeaky curds with a live music lineup, a classic car show and several tasting events.
The Twin Cities are the closest metro area to Ellsworth
One major highway serves as the commuter lane for residents of Ellsworth. “U.S. Highway 10 goes right to the Twin Cities. You can be at the outskirts in just about 35 to 45 minutes,” says Neuhaus. “That’s the closest metropolitan area, and it’s across the river in Minnesota. The nearest city in Wisconsin would be Eau Claire, and that’s more than an hour away.” Highway 10 is also the quickest route to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. Wisconsin state Route 65 is the most direct way to access Interstate 94 and Regions Hospital in St. Paul.
Retail options are limited outside bars and cheese curd factory
Other than the Nilssen’s Foods and a few bars like Just Ka’s and The Thirsty Badger on Main Street, the town has few commercial retail options. “Ellsworth has a grocery store and a few little restaurants like Caribou Coffee, but there’s not a lot of business outside of the cheese curd factory,” Neuhaus says. “There’s nowhere in town where you can buy new clothing, for example, so people will end up going to the Twin Cities to shop at Target.”

Cairns Woods Loop and golf course provide outdoor recreation
One of the only hiking areas nearby is the Cairns Woods Loop, a trail on the northeast end of town that is roughly 1 mile long. “There’s also the Ellsworth Country Club for people who like to golf,” Neuhaus says. The 9-hole course is open to the public, except on days when the high school golf team competes. The Rush River, 10 miles east of Ellsworth, is a popular stop for casual fishermen, although anglers looking for a more extensive experience will likely head west to Prescott.
