Elmore offers rural living close to the amenities of Morristown
During autumn, the high-reaching canopies of red maple, birch and beech trees turn Elmore's rolling landscape into a kaleidoscope of colors. However, its location within the foothills of Elmore Mountain makes the area’s natural surroundings a focal point year round. “It’s a close-knit community that’s really pretty and picturesque,” says Susan Martin, a Realtor with Century 21 Martin and Associates Real Estate with more than 30 years of selling experience in the area. “It’s small, but there are lots of outdoor activities and resources within a few minutes.” Residents recreate on Lake Elmore and in Morristown, 5 miles west, which serves as the area’s main shopping and dining hub.
Much of the area's recreation centers around the outdoors
Residents get free access to Elmore State Park, which has a beach for swimming and watercraft rentals for paddling its namesake lake. Wooded trails wind up Elmore Mountain, where hikers can enjoy sweeping views of the terrain below from a fire tower at its peak. The popular Lamoille Valley Rail Trail passes through Morristown, also home to Copley Country Club’s nine-hole public golf course. The Bijou Theatre is also in town and shows $5 movies every Tuesday. Stowe Mountain Resort is a 23-mile trip from the community and features more than 100 ski slopes, cross-country skiing routes, ice skating and more.
Homes sit along the waterfront and back from rural roads
Thick forest runs parallel to Elmore’s rural roads, opening up to patches of untouched meadow backdropped by the nearby Worcester range ridgelines. Homes sit at the end of long gravel roads, with many going unnoticed thanks to the surrounding greenery. Architecture varies from ranch and farmhouse to cabin styles, and build dates span over 150 years. Properties cluster along the shoreline of Lake Elmore and typically come with private piers. Those in the community’s outer portions tend to include more land, with many plots covering more than 10 acres. Homes usually sell between $260,000 and $600,000. Waterfront properties or homes on more significant acreage can cap off at $1.4 million. Elmore also has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.
Residents do most of their shopping and dining in Morristown
The Elmore Store has been a community mainstay since the early 1800s, offering groceries, local products and deli sandwiches. “It’s currently under renovation, and I feel it will become quite the community center when it’s finished,” Martin says. Its new owners began renovating in late 2025, with coworking and community spaces as a part of its updated design. Morristown, 5 miles west, has several locally owned restaurants, including Lost Nation Brewing, which pairs craft beer with classic pub-style eats. 10 Railroad Street serves American fare within a restored 19th-century train station. Its downtown district houses several specialty shops and markets, and strip malls on the northern side include a Hannaford for a more robust grocery selection, alongside big-box stores like Dollar Tree and Marshalls.
Peoples Academy's observatory brings the public in to stargaze
Lamoille South Supervisory Union oversees the Elmore-Morristown Unified School District, which has yet to receive a grade on Niche. Morristown Elementary School enrolls prekindergarten through fourth grade and has a B rating on Niche. Peoples Academy Middle School covers fifth through eighth grade and earns a B-minus. The B-rated Peoples Academy welcomes high school students on a campus that appears on the National Register of Historic Places. The campus features a 1930s-era observatory that occasionally opens for public stargazing. However, Vermont’s school choice program allows for enrollment at A-rated Stowe High School, which Niche ranks as the best public high school in the state.
Getting around on State Route 12
State Route 12 cuts through the community, linking the area to surrounding cities and towns, like Montpelier, 21 miles south. The throughway also connects to State Route 100, which provides access to Burlington, about 50 miles west. Shorter trips lead to Copley Hospital, which is located in Morristown.
