Serene and secluded in San Mateo County

Serene and secluded feeling, yet near the action of the city sums up Emerald Hills, a neighborhood in San Mateo County, about 33 miles from San Francisco. “It has a real country feel to it, which is the main thing that draws people to the neighborhood,” says Dana Cappiello, a Realtor for Sotheby’s International Realty who sells throughout the San Francisco area. “It’s also really safe and the schools are great.”

Big homes on big lots

The homes in Emerald Hills are primarily midcentury-era ranch-style, tastefully renovated to maintain their vintage charm while incorporating modern conveniences like new appliances, updated lighting, and open floor plans. Newcomers will also find a variety of custom contemporary builds, each offering unique design elements and plenty of square footage. They sit on large lots — often more than an acre — surrounded by verdant landscaping and tall, mature trees. They perch quiet streets that wind through the hills and often boast picturesque views of the San Francisco Bay. Prices range from $1 million for 1,500 square feet to $5.5 million for 5,700 square feet. Those looking for townhouses and condos can find them in the neighborhood's southeast region, ranging from $845,000 to $902,000 for an average of 1,100 square feet.

Root for the 49ers at Canyon Inn

Residents head to nearby Redwood City to shop. They pick up groceries at Whole Foods off Jefferson Avenue, Safeway off El Camino Real or Grocery Outlet off Broadway. Nearby CVS offers home essentials, and bookworms can pick up the latest new release at Barnes & Noble. Dining options are plentiful in Redwood City, too, but many residents stick close to home when they want to dine out, and head to Canyon Inn off Canyon Road. The local favorite has been serving the neighborhood since 1973 and offers burgers, pizza, and Mexican dishes in a cozy, laid-back atmosphere. For more Mexican dishes, Sancho’s Taqueria is a go-to for tacos, burritos and carne asada.
