Midway
Neighborhood in Escondido, California
San Diego County 92027
Condos from $350,000, single-family up to $1.2 million
"In Midway, you'll find mostly single-level homes built between the 1960s and the 1980s," says Kathy Robbins, Realtor with Re/Max United, who's been selling homes since 1978. "And because Escondido is like a smaller version of San Diego, people have migrated here to enjoy a more affordable home in a simpler, more entry-level neighborhood — while still being only a couple miles from all the fun along Grand Avenue in downtown Escondido." Condos range from $350,000 to $500,000, and townhouses from $450,000 to around $600,000, depending on condition and size. Midway's streets have sidewalks lined by a mix of pastel stucco and siding ranch-style homes priced between $700,000 and $900,000. Larger single-story and two-story elegant Mediterranean-style homes with backyard pools and creative landscaping can fetch between $1 million and $1.25 million.El Norte Park playground, Washington Park pool, Mountain View baseball
Daily dog walks can include the path through Escondido's newest recreation space, El Norte Park. This 2.5-acre greenspace between homes on Hoover and Conway streets has a paved walkway, picnic benches and a colorful playground where families can meet for outdoor fun. Skateboarders, swimmers and soccer players head to Washington Park in the heart of Midway. Near the local high school, Escondido Little League athletes play baseball at Mountain View Park, which also offers tennis and pickleball courts.Highly rated Escondido Union High District
Public school kids start at one of several elementary schools, including Oak Hill Elementary, graded C-minus on Niche. Hidden Valley Middle gets a C. Orange Glen High, given a B-minus, is within Escondido Union High School District, which earns an A-minus. In 2023, the Orange Glen High Skate Team won first place at the second-annual National Team Skateboard League Competition, earning them the "Best Skate Team in San Diego County" title.Classic cars all summer at Cruisin Grand
From May through September, more than 5,000 visitors and classic-car buffs head downtown on Friday nights for Cruisin' Grand Escondido to check out a changing show of more than 500 cruisers, hot rods and vintage cars.Hop on the 15 to San Diego, bus to Central Escondido, SPRINTER to the coast
Most residents drive, but public transit is readily available. San Diego Metropolitan Transit System bus stops line main corridors for transit into downtown or to the Escondido Transit Center. The SPRINTER light rail route goes from the Escondido Transit Center all the way to the Oceanside Transit Center in less than an hour. McClellan-Palomar Airport is a 14-mile, 25-minute drive west, and San Diego International Airport is a 35-mile, 45-minute drive south.Enjoy the perk of Black Rock Coffee and multiple shopping plazas
Casual dining choices add to Midway's easygoing vibe. In the Old Mill Pond shopping mall, Soprano's Pizza is the spot for homestyle Italian. Next door, Bamboo House is bedecked in red paper lanterns and specializes in classic Chinese combo meals. For quick authentic Mexican, Jilberto's Taco Shop is tucked next to Office Depot in the Escondido Village shopping center. Black Rock Coffee is fairly new to the neighborhood and is fast becoming a favorite for custom beverages. There are several options for grocery shopping. In Escondido Village, Vallarta Supermarket is also home to La Cocina, which serves a scratch-made dine-in menu and meal kits to bring home. The neighborhood Walmart is right next door, and Albertsons is across the street in the Vineyard Square Shopping Center.Homes on the west side of Midway are less than a 3-mile, 10-minute drive or a 25-minute bus ride to historic Grand Avenue, where locals explore an eclectic blend of retailers, including Helen's Book Mark, The Grand Tea Room and Cute Cakes Bakery & Café. For a little treasure-hunting, the 10,000-square-foot Escondido Antique Mall on Grand Avenue is an emporium of vintage finds from more than 100 vendors.
