Rural, coastal living south of Eureka
Humboldt Hill is a rural community along the foggy Northern California coast, just south of Eureka. Its homes are nestled in a patchwork of pastures and forests just minutes from the blue waters of Humboldt Bay, and a few miles from Pacific beaches. “It’s a rural, suburban setting in the outskirts of Eureka. Originally, this was where a lot of the farmers, loggers and fishermen lived, but it’s slowly added homes and turned into more of a bedroom community,” says Larry Doss, broker and president of Ming Tree Realtors, a longtime area resident.
Gardens, beaches and a wildlife refuge
Humboldt Botanical Garden occupies the southern edge of the community and makes for lovely sightseeing along the Northern California coast. At 45 acres, the garden features an array of native plants, earth sculptures and walking trails where visitors are greeted by floral blooms and trees. Waterfront walkways can be found nearby at King Salmon Beach on Humboldt Bay. It may be small, but it offers scenic views near public docks and boat launches. Only a few miles south of Humboldt Hill, residents can enjoy the natural scenery at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge, a wetland habitat with hiking trails, fishing and hunting. Plus, the nearby Headwaters Forest Reserve offers trails for hiking and biking.

Upper-end homes in the exurbs
Humboldt Hill offers an array of homes in a rural, coastal setting. “There’s a mix of starter homes and upper-end properties. There are some nice, modern neighborhoods, and you’ve also got homes on small country roads,” Doss says. Ranch-style and Modern Traditional are the most common designs in the area. Many houses date back to the 1970s and 80s and have been well-maintained and upgraded with modern amenities. The streets are calm and safe, with very little traffic. Lot sizes can range from around 7,000 square feet to upwards of 2 acres, meaning residents have plenty of privacy and space. Prices range anywhere from $400,000 to $900,000 depending on size, age and acreage.

The décor at Taqueria Tecoman is as flavorful as the cuisine. This neighborhood taqueria is known for the mural on its outside wall depicting a lively Mexican street scene, and the vibrant signage above its front door. The restaurant serves south-of-the-border classics like tacos, burritos and agua fresca. Just up the street is Country Club Market, a family market and deli with a small selection of snacks and produce. For everything else, it’s about 3 miles to Eureka, where locals can shop at Walmart, Target, North Coast Co-op and Costco or dine out at a variety of eateries in the city’s Old Town district.
