Life among the coastal redwood trees
The woods between Eureka and Arcata are home to a small community called Indianola. Douglas-fir, Sitka spruce and California redwood trees envelop the area, and the grey Eureka sky hovers overhead. “You’re there because you don’t want to be in town, but you want to be close to town,” says Larry Doss, Broker and Owner of Ming Tree Realty, who grew up in Indianola. “There’s a tiny little store and a one-pump gas station out there, maybe two.” Indianola is only 1 mile from U.S. Highway 101 and Arcata Bay, but it still looks and feels like a one-road town. “You’ve got a country setting and not a lot of traffic,” says Doss.
The Indianola neighborhood is nestled in forests and close to the Pacific Coast.

Parks, hunting and surfing nearby
There aren’t any parks in Indianola, but Sequoia Park in Eureka is only 6 miles away. The park offers a zoo and elevated walkways suspended between the park’s massive California redwood trees and walking paths. Hunting is a popular pastime in Indianola, and Kneeland, a community where the hills are full of game, is only 10 miles southeast. Surfing is also popular here. In fact, Moonstone Beach is one of the area’s best-kept secrets and is about 16 miles north, and a 20-minute drive along the coastline via U.S. Route 101. The beach is known for its secluded feel and consistent swell. Waves are usually 4 to 8 feet high but can reach 15 to 20 feet during storm periods.
Everyone loves a good swing set session sometimes at Sequoia Park.

Homes along quiet, tree-lined streets
Homes in Indianola are typically spread out along tree-lined side streets. "There are little pocket neighborhoods with no sidewalks," says Doss. "Very often you've got wooded and hilly views depending on where you are." Properties sell for between $400,000 and $750,000. Homes tend to be craftsman, ranch-style or cottage. Some larger properties with around 3,000 square feet can sell for over $1 million. Indianola also has a manufactured home community where units sell for between $70,000 and $170,000 and tend to have carports, small yards and screened porches. Home buyers should know that the Cap Index gives Indianola a 2 out of 10 crime score, which is lower than the national average of 4.
