A seaside community along the Northern California coast
Manila is a tiny community on a seaside peninsula where residents can take windswept walks along chilly beaches and rolling sand dunes. Located on the coast between Arcata Bay and the Pacific Ocean, this rural village offers residential streets surrounded by parks, wetlands and protected wilderness areas. And while it feels slightly remote, it’s only 5 miles from Eureka and Arcata, Humboldt County’s two largest cities. “It's a gorgeous area with a beautiful beach. The housing is a little rough, but there are some that have been fixed up,” says Realtor Natalie Hill of Ming Tree Realty, who’s lived and worked in Humboldt County for more than a decade.
Manila traces its origins back to the middle of the 20th century when an influx of Midwesterners moved to the area during Humboldt County’s logging and timber boom. It was largely made up of the mill's employees and their families until the industry waned in the 1980s and 90s and has since transitioned into something of a bedroom community to Eureka and Arcata.
Walk to beaches and sand dunes by the water’s edge
Manila is home to the Humboldt Coastal Nature Center, the region’s gateway to the Manila Dunes, a 1,000-acre wildlife habitat and recreation area that skirts the edge of the ocean. Visitors can hike sandy trails through dunes blanketed with sea scrub and wildflowers before taking in a Pacific sunset at the beach. Along the bayfront, Manila Community Park offers sports courts, a disc golf course and playgrounds within walking distance of many residences. The Lighthouse Market & Mini Golf offers family fun in a lumberjack-themed putt-putt course. Throughout Manila, coastal wildlife and waterfront views are a common sight. East of the bay, there are mountainous state and national parks that encompass millions of acres, some of which are home to the oldest redwood groves on earth. “Humboldt County is such a unique place with the redwoods right by the coast. There’s no place in the world like it,” Hill says.
The Manila Dunes is a protected area with many trails throughout the dunes in Manila.
