Tank tops, sweatshirts and sunshine on sleepy mornings in Rosewood
Some days the skies over Rosewood, a residential neighborhood near the bayfront city of Eureka, look like a grey blanket, some days, the sun shines over the whole city. “We dress in layers,” says Larry Doss, Broker and owner of Ming Tree Realty who grew up in a neighborhood just outside of Eureka. “It can be warm tank top weather; it can be hoody weather – and usually both.” Rosewood falls just outside the city limits, but it’s still close enough that it feels like part of Eureka, where early mornings see fog roll in from Humboldt Bay. “Rosewood is a laid-back, sleepy kind-of area,” says Doss.

Houses resting by coastal redwood trees
Rosewood has a wooded drainage area in the center of the neighborhood, which means some houses back up into coastal redwood and Sitka spruce trees. There are a variety of homes along the neighborhood’s sidewalk-less streets, from Victorian and craftsman styles to bungalows built between 1930 and 1950. Houses tend to sell for $200,000 to $650,000, with single-story, 1,000-square-foot cottages at the bottom of the price range and 3,000-square-foot Mediterranean-influenced homes at the top. Some homes go for just over $1 million, and they are usually tucked into the forested sections of the neighborhood and are on multi-acre lots.

Options to hike, hunt and fish around Eureka
Eureka has an outdoor activity for almost everybody. “It depends on someone’s taste, but people like hunting, fishing and surfing around here,” says Doss. Nearby hunting and fishing areas include Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge, about 12 miles south, and Jacoby Creek, 10 miles east. Surfing happens closer to the city at spots like Samoa Beach, located on the Samoa Peninsula 6 miles north via the Samoa Bridge that connects the area to Eureka. Sequoia Park is about a mile away from Rosewood and has hiking areas, a small zoo, and towering Sequoia Redwoods. A suspended walkway lets visitors feel as tall as these ancient trees, and slides and gently sloping ramps are built between clusters of trees for kids to play on. Rosewood also has small greenspaces like Highland Park and historic Humboldt State Park, home to a former military outpost and logging museum. Rosewood is also next to the 18-hole, par-70, Eureka Municipal Golf Course.
