Living in “The City That Soars”

“The City That Soars:” a cheeky motto for a place called Falcon Heights, Minnesota, to have. But with one of the largest state fairs in the U.S., a bustling university campus and one-of-a-kind designer homes, life in Falcon Heights can’t help but feel like an elevated experience. “I like the small-town feel, but just being minutes away from large-city amenities in both Saint Paul and Minneapolis,” says Falcon Heights Assistant to the City Administrator Kelly Nelson.

Employee-exclusive living and diverse housing

Many of the 5,400 Minnesotans living in Falcon Heights work at the University of Minnesota’s Saint Paul campus, which occupies the city's southwest section. In fact, a couple of residential areas in Falcon Heights are exclusive to university employees: the famous University Grove neighborhood features over 100 visually striking homes individually designed by renowned architects. As well, 1666 Coffman Condominiums welcomes U of M faculty aged 55 and up. However, properties that welcome any homebuyer are found all throughout Falcon Heights. Homes from throughout the 20th century — from 1940s cottages to new Craftsman constructions — and a handful of town houses are available and priced between $330,000 and $600,000. Condos at 1666 Coffman boast some of the lowest prices in the city, with one-bedroom models starting in the mid-$100,000s.

The State Fair, Minnesota’s crown jewel

Directly east of the university is the 322-acre Minnesota State Fairgrounds. While the venue hosts over 200 entertaining events year-round — from motor shows to livestock expos — it’s most crowded during the Minnesota State Fair, the second-largest state fair in the country. “It’s a 12-day-long event that draws over 2 million people to the area,” Nelson says. Falcon Heights also has other spots where locals can enjoy the outdoors outside Fair season, including Community Park, which features several sports facilities, a community garden and an outdoor ice rink during the colder months. Residents also have access to the U of M Les Bolstad Golf Course, a public 18-hole course that offers daily and seasonal green passes.

Comic book shops and Middle Eastern eats

For those looking for entertainment indoors, Source Comics & Games is a one-stop-shop for all things memorabilia-related. This self-described haven for “super nerds and geeks” fills its 10,000-square-foot facility with comics, tabletop games, collectibles and hangout spaces to nerd out with friends. When hours of nonstop fandom fun leave customers famished, locals head to Mim’s Café. This modest restaurant sits next to the university, and customers can dig into Middle Eastern eats like falafel sandwiches and char-grilled kebabs. In the evening, sports fans can enjoy the big game over a beer or two with neighbors at Stout’s Pub & Grill, a lively watering hole serving traditional American fare. Locals have no issues running errands with HarMar Mall just north of Falcon Heights. Shoppers can grab groceries at Cub Foods or shop major brands like Michaels, HomeGoods and Barnes & Noble.

Falcon Heights has plenty of access to public transportation, with Metro Transit primarily serving the area. Bus stops can be found all along Larpenteur Avenue W, which halves the neighborhood horizontally. Commuters who travel by car are well accommodated by Minnesota State Route 51, which lines the area’s eastern border, and Minnesota State Route 280, less than 1/2 a mile from Falcon Heights’ western border. For out-of-state travel, Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport is exactly 9 miles south.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process. Centrally located in the quiet, established Como Park neighborhood, this all-brick home has old world charm and many of its original features, including a one-of-a-kind plaster ship above the wood-burning fireplace. Glass knobs on the doors, arched doorways, hardwood floors, and ceiling coving help to distinguish this home. The colors flow through the house, with sunlight filling the rooms. A
