Originally settled as a farming community in the early 1800s, Fall Branch residents of today enjoy a similar, off-the-beaten-path lifestyle to those in years past. With most development coming in the form of 20th-century homes, the community’s residential landscape maintains a quiet, know-your-neighbor appeal. The surrounding region also offers opportunities to explore wildlife, including trips to the trails of Laural Run Park. Though many value Fall Branch for its secluded setting, Interstate 81 directly south connects residents to the amenities of neighboring Kingsport. “It’s one of those areas that still has untouched farmland,” Betty Fite, a Realtor with Weichert Realtors Saxon Clark, says of Fall Branch. “The roads there are so small that you’re almost afraid to pass the person on the other side.”

State Route 93 runs north to south through the center of the community. Along the mainline are several houses of worship, a handful of small local stores like M&M Farm Supply and the Fall Branch Volunteer Fire Department. Narrow roads break off in either direction, winding along the region’s hilly terrain. Low-hanging telephone lines parallel the roads, spreading across open farm landscapes with wooden barns and rolling hills. The old farm buildings often accompany homes built through the 1900s. Ranch-style homes, some of which are raised, comprise the bulk of the housing stock, alongside occasional cottage and farmhouse styles. Commonalities between each include plots ranging from a half to full acre, personal septic tanks and views of surrounding mountains and hilltops, full of maple, hickory and oak trees that change colors during autumn. Exploring the trails of Laurel Run Park
Laurel Run Park, a frequented spot in the area, sits 11 miles northwest of the neighborhood. The park includes picnic tables, as well as spots for fishing and swimming along the Holsten River for full-day visitors. However, most make the trip to hike out to Laurel Run Falls. While along the trail, visitors will pass local wildflowers like trilliums and chicks and rock hop across the stream before reaching the cascading waters. The public greens of The Crossings Golf Club sit 4 miles south, while Gray Fossil Site, 13 miles east, looks into the region's past. “The city came across the fossils while doing construction on State Route 75,” says Linda Spencer, a representative of Visit Johnson City. “Then they built the museum to put them all on display for people in the area to check out.” The site features fossils just under 5 million years old, including a new species of red panda.
Running errands in Kingsport
Though a Dollar General on State Route 93 sells daily essentials, locals head 11 miles northeast into Kingsport for more robust shopping and dining options. While in the area, residents can pick up groceries from Food City in Southland Shopping Center and shop the big-box retailers of Kingsport Pavilion Shopping Center 4 miles farther, which includes a Target, Kohl’s and several others. About 2 miles from the community, Café 93 serves biscuits, gravy and other hearty country-style breakfast dishes in a dinner next to a lumber depot and a couple of rustic low-slung office buildings often surrounded by pick-up trucks and heavy farm equipment. Meanwhile, friends catch up over a drink, live music and a round of darts closer to home at Big Orange, a bar on Tucker Hollow Road.

Ringing in the season at the FBS Fall Festival
In late October, Fall Branch School hosts the FBS Fall Festival. During the evening event, attendees can brave the Haunted Hallway, spearheaded by Daniel Boone Theater, enjoy carnival games and compete for sweet treats in the cakewalk. When the holiday season rolls around, the Fall Branch Volunteer Fire Department hosts its annual Breakfast with Santa and Parade. Alongside sharing Christmas lists with Santa, little ones and their families get to watch a holiday-themed parade, which includes horseback riders and the shiny wheels of Fall Branch Car Club.
Getting involved at Daniel Boone High School
Young students, prekindergarten through 8th grade, take classes in the neighborhood at Fall Branch Elementary School, which maintains a C-plus rating on Niche. Meanwhile, older students head to Daniel Boone High School, which holds a B rating. The high school offers several student clubs and organizations, including HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America). The organization works to improve student's knowledge of health careers and hone the skills needed to succeed in the field after graduating.
Commuting along Interstate 81
With Interstate 81 running along the community’s southern border, commuters can hop on the throughway to reach Johnson City, a 22-mile drive southeast, as well as Kingsport to the northeast with the help of Interstate 26. Those seeking medical care also head into Kingsport to receive treatment at Holston Valley Medical Center. Interstate 81 also offers direct, 16-mile trips northeast to the flights of Tri-Cities Airport.
