Farmington is a bucolic town in the New Hampshire countryside
Farmington is a rural village once known as “The Shoe Capital of New Hampshire” for its many shoe factories, cobblers and cordwainers. Today, the shoe industry is long gone, and what remains is a quintessential New England town surrounded by quiet country lanes and idyllic forests. The center of town has a lively mix of historic buildings, shops and stately architecture, while the outskirts are peaceful and bucolic. “Farmington is a little more rural than the surrounding towns, but it also has a little downtown district with a lot of historic homes,” says Realtor Kate Drew of Keller Williams Realty, who has worked in the area for nearly 20 years. "The wonderful thing about New England is that everything is old, and you can really see that on Main Street."

Historic homes dot the streetscape in Downtown Farmington
Regal Colonial styles, austere Saltbox homes and eclectic Victorian architecture can all be seen in Farmington. Many of the homes date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Some 20th-century homes, including Traditional and ranch-style houses, are also available. Homes in town are on narrow streets but still offer large lots for gardening and outdoor landscaping. Further out from the town center, homes are situated amid natural scenery, including a few waterfront homes on the banks of Baxter Lake. “The older homes tend to be closer to downtown, but you’ll also find some newer homes further out,” Drew says. Prices range from around $300,000 to $600,000, although some large, historic homes have sold for around $1 million.

Flooding may be an issue in some parts of town
Flooding may be an issue in some residential areas because of the area’s plentiful rivers and streams. The Cocheco River, which runs through the center of Farmington, has been known to overflow, causing water damage to local infrastructure, buildings and roads. The river has been the site of numerous U.S. Army Corps of Engineers improvements, which have lessened the flooding risk in recent years.
Farmington has a golf course, a state forest and a small lake
Parks and outdoor recreation are plentiful in Farmington. Avid golfers can tee up at Farmington Country Club, a public 9-hole golf course that winds through lush woodlands. Hikers can trek through the wooded terrain at Blue Job Mountain State Forest, the second-tallest mountain in the Blue Hills. The forest is home to several fire towers, open to the public, that provide panoramic views of the countryside. “It’s got one of the highest peaks around, and it’s surrounded by beautiful forestland,” Drew says. Baxter Lake is another popular destination with a campground and boat ramps. With 300 acres of water, the lake has plenty of space for small-boat sailing, fishing, canoeing and kayaking.

Three pizzerias and a popular breakfast diner
Pizza is something of a pastime in Farmington. The town only has a handful of restaurants, and three of them are pizzerias, including Farmington House of Pizza, South Main Pizza and Crowley’s Variety & Grill. Which one reigns supreme is always up for debate. For breakfast and lunch, there’s also The Farmer’s Kitchen, a popular diner that serves up breakfast classics from stacks of pancakes to eggs Benedict and everything in between. The nearest major grocers and big box chains are found about 8 miles away in Rochester.

Getting to nearby cities from rural Farmington
Farmington is along the Maine border, just north of Rochester and about 50 miles from Manchester, the state’s most populous city. Residents will likely need a car to get around because of its semi-remote, rural location. However, several bus stops on Main Street offer a public transit option to Rochester, Dover and Portsmouth. Wentworth-Douglas Hospital, about 17 miles away, is the nearest medical center.
