Midcentury modern accents echo Frank Lloyd Wright
Midcentury modern designs feature prominently in Highlands of Seminole, echoing the Prairie School designs of Wisconsin’s architectural legend, Frank Lloyd Wright. New Traditional homes are another common style in the neighborhood and many homes display Tudor or Neo-Colonial accents, such as arched windows or classic window shutters. Well-maintained lawns and sidewalks line the streets, and most homes also feature attached garages, key for the tough Wisconsin winters. Homes in Highlands of Seminole range in price from $500,000 to $600,000 generally, with a few outliers selling reaching as high as $900,000.Small parks, large nature areas and an IMAX all nearby
Residents can take full advantage of small local parks and one of Madison’s most desirable natural areas. Rosecommons Park and Chicory Meadow Park both lie within the neighborhood, offering playgrounds, ball fields and trails. For longer walks or naturalist-led Sunday hikes, folks can head to the University of Wisconsin Arboretum, the southeastern corner of which borders Highlands of Seminole. “Maybe you’ve come to see the magnolias blooming in the spring, or the prairie, or fall colors, snow on the pines. It’s like everyone marks the year by changes they like to go see,” says Maddie Smith, Community Education Coordinator at the Arboretum. In the cold winter months, cross-country skiers fly on local trails or folks can escape the bitter cold with a big screen picture at AMC’s IMAX theater.Multicultural experiences at highly rated West High School

It is also known for its academics: more than once, the school has had more National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists than any other Wisconsin high school.Local athletics, summer concerts and a huge farmers’ market
The neighborhood and surrounding area offer events both small and large. The Highlands of Seminole Neighborhood Association hosts a fall party and a spring garage sale. For a local athletic showcase, the Seminole Swim and Tennis Club sends a team to — and in the past, has hosted — Madison’s All City Swim & Dive Meet. “It’s the second-largest outdoor swim meet in the country,” says Keith. “It’s pretty awesome.” Summer also brings Concerts at McKee, a series of free events at McKee Farms Park, and the enormous Dane County Farmers’ Market, which encircles the State Capitol building downtown each Saturday with produce, cheese, flowers and goods from over 170 local producers. Toward summer’s end, people can take in the Sugar Maple Music Festival on the shores of Lake Waubesa.Commuting options by car and bike
Highlands of Seminole provides commuting options for both drivers and cyclists. The latter can zip down the nearby Capital City Bike Trail, which runs 20 miles all the way through downtown Madison. Driving options include the major Beltline Highway just outside the neighborhood, plus McKee Road and Fish Hatchery Road. Fish Hatchery provides direct access to downtown Madison, with many options for shopping, nightlife and events only 5 miles away. For travel farther afield, Dane County Regional Airport sits about 15 miles away.Fish fries, craft beers and other Wisconsin favorites
Classic Wisconsin culinary favorites are on offer nearby, like the Friday fish fry Quivey’s Grove, where people can explore the gardens, 19th century buildings and farm antiques, as well as a tunnel and wine cellar while waiting for a table. For more casual pub fare, the Great Dane Pub & Brewing Company’s Fitchburg location pours craft pints and serves up burgers and German-inspired appetizers. Tabletop game enthusiasts can explore the huge selection at the cavernous Noble Knight Games, and sausage lovers can pick up brats, landjaeger and other authentic German delicacies at Bavaria Sausage, where recipes have remained unchanged for 62 years. For other groceries, Pick ‘N Save is just around the corner off of Fish Hatchery Road.
