Newer builds with commercial development nearby
While single-family homes dominate the neighborhood, it is surrounded by other sorts of development. “Quarry Hill itself is kind of a mix of residential and commercial,” Crim says. “ There’s a couple of large pharmaceutical companies that are stationed off Lacy Road and Fish Hatchery that have been at the core of some of the growth.” Homes typically date from the early 2000s, and common styles include New Traditional and split-level homes. Others feature midcentury modern elements. Attached garages, spacious lots and well-maintained yards are typical. Because of its comparatively recent development, most trees aren’t massive yet, though they’ve grown beyond saplings. Well-kept sidewalks line the streets. Prices range from $430,000 to almost $600,000.A mountain biking destination and new pickleball courts
Residents can head to the neighborhood’s Quarry Hill Park to enjoy the playground, community garden or catch a glimpse of wildlife like sandhill cranes or the occasional deer. Biking is a popular pursuit in Fitchburg and both street and mountain bikers have nearby places to ride. “Quarry Ridge Recreation Area, I’m told, has the best mountain biking in the area,” Crim says. “It’s a popular destination for people who want to do more extreme outdoor sports. It’s part of what makes the area unique.,” McGaw Park, about a mile east, recently added pickleball courts and is another option for outdoor recreation. “Pickleball is just blowing up around here,” Crim says.West High School hosts an annual Equity Symposium
Students in Quarry Hill can attend the Madison Metropolitan School District, rated a B-plus by Niche. Leopold Elementary, which earns a C-plus, serves the neighborhood. Cherokee Heights Middle School scores a B. West High School earns an A and offers competitive athletic programs, AP classes and youth apprenticeships and internships. Students can also earn dual enrollment credit with Madison College and attend West’s new annual Equity Symposium. Eagle School, a kindergarten through 8th grade private school geared toward gifted and talented students, is another nearby option.Markets, library activities and summer music
Quarry Hill residents can easily access Fitchburg’s local events. The Fitchburg Farmers Market runs from May through October at the Agora Pavilion. The Fitchburg Library hosts multiple book clubs and craft workshops. It also has programming geared toward kids, including story times, craft sessions and family trivia nights. Concerts at McKee is a free summer music series at McKee Farms Park. Four Winds Farm, a recently renovated farm that now doubles as an event space, hosts workshops, live music, and other special events, uniting the urban and rural character for which Fitchburg is known.Well-developed bike infrastructure and proximity to major employers
Fitchburg is known for its bike-friendly status. “Madison is one of the bike capitals of the country, I believe. And Fitchburg’s bike trails, I think, are even more elaborate than Madison’s,” says Crim. Commuters can easily access job opportunities from Fitchburg, including Promega, a biotech company next door to Quarry Hill. “You get a lot of people from Epic who want to be in the area, or who are commuting downtown because Fitchburg is so centrally located,” Crim says. Downtown Madison is 7 miles away via Fish Hatchery Road, and Verona’s Epic Systems, one of the area’s largest employers that has driven much of the recent growth, is 9 miles away via McKee Road.Local restaurants and shops within walking distance
Retail and dining options are right at the edge of the neighborhood. The Chocolate Shoppe scoops ice cream at its location off Lacy Road. Oasis Café, “a cute little coffee shop,” according to Crim, serves coffee from Madison’s EVP coffee roasters, as well as breakfast and lunch. Me & Julio is another option and offers outdoor seating. Other businesses include the day spa, Kneaded Relief. “It’s a popular destination for a day spa in Madison,” Crim says. All of these businesses are within a mile of Quarry Hill. Pick ‘N Save is the closet option for groceries and is under 2 miles north on Fish Hatchery Road.
