Florence-Firestone is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, which has an overall B rating from Niche. In addition to its kindergarten through sixth-grade classes, Russell Elementary School also offers a magnet center through which identified gifted and high-ability students receive differentiated instruction. Identified middle-school students can continue on a gifted track at Charles Drew Middle School. All students here can benefit from a well-rounded education that includes core academic courses, athletic opportunities and electives such as ethnic studies and journalism. Several academic pathways are offered at John C. Plaza La Alameda blends retail, dining and cultural events

Florence-Firestone has a wealth of shopping and dining opportunities. The neighborhood features multiple supermarkets, including Raul’s Market, La Mexicana Meat Market and Amapola Market. There are many other local shops in the area, both along major thoroughfares like Florence Avenue, and at shopping centers such as Plaza Americana and Plaza La Alameda. Plaza La Alameda is particularly popular and has a variety of national chains and local boutiques and restaurants.
