Flushing offers spacious homes and relaxed city living

Flushing is a well-established, vibrant community that forms part of the New York City borough of Queens. Among other things, the neighborhood is known for its distinctive residential architecture, its broad selection of well-maintained homes and its conveniently located townhomes and condominiums. While many people think of New York as an overwhelming, densely populated city, large segments of Flushing feature plenty of space and a decidedly relaxed quality. These attributes make the neighborhood attractive to a broad range of potential homebuyers.

Residential zones feature diverse architecture and zoning rules

Roughly 220,000 people live in Flushing. The roots of the neighborhood extend all the way back to 1645, when Dutch settlers started building their homes along the banks of local Flushing Creek. The area grew steadily over the years, along with Queens and the rest of New York City. Flushing retains a largely residential character. At the same time, its booming downtown ranks as New York’s fourth largest center for commerce and retail sales. Distinct residential sections of the neighborhood include Waldheim, noted for its mix of large, architecturally diverse houses; Auburndale, which features many homes in the Tudor style; Linden Hill; and Broadway-Flushing. Several of these areas have zoning ordinances designed to preserve older homes and maintain a low-density population.

Cultural mix and green spaces define the neighborhood

Flushing is well-known for its ethnic diversity. It boasts one of New York City’s largest Asian populations, as well as significant Hispanic, Middle Eastern, African-American and European populations. The area abounds with fine and casual restaurants, retail stores and specialty shops. Flushing is also home to 897-acre Flushing Meadows Corona Park, site of two World’s Fairs. The many attractions found in the park include Citi Field (the New York Mets’ home stadium), the USTA National Tennis Center, the Queens Zoo, the Queens Botanical Garden, the Queens Museum of Art and the New York Hall of Science. In addition, residents can pursue recreational activities in adjacent 234-acre Kissena Park.

Subways, buses and highways make commuting convenient

The residents of Flushing can also take advantage of an extensive transportation system that includes more than a dozen bus routes, subway connections to the rest of New York City, five train stations belonging to the Long Island Rail Road and major highways such as Grand Central Parkway and the Van Wyck Expressway. The campus of the City University of New York’s Queens College sits near the border of the neighborhood in Kew Garden Hills. With its mix of the old and the new, the modern and the traditional, Flushing epitomizes the benefits of big city life.
