About Foothill Farms, CA

Foothill Farms began as an Air Force base suburb

Foothill Farms is a census-designated place and suburb on the outskirts of Sacramento. In the mid-20th century, it was one of several residential areas that sprang up around the McClellan Air Force Base, a major employer in the Sacramento area for decades until it closed in the 1990s. Despite the base’s closure, the military and government remain major industries here. Neighborhoods in Foothill Farms are dominated by residential subdivisions full of winding streets and single-family homes. The North Division of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office oversees law enforcement and emergency services in this area; Interstate 80 runs diagonally through the southern end of Foothill Farms and connects residents to downtown Sacramento approximately 12 miles away. Evelyn Jenkins, a local real estate agent with 1st Choice Realty and Associates, says people are attracted to Foothill Farms for its relative affordability and proximity to Sacramento, Roseville and Folsom.

Homes built during the mid-to-late 20th century

Most homes in Foothill Farms were built between the 1960s and the mid 90s. Residential development slowed around the turn of the century after the McClellan Air Force Base closed. "You can find single-family homes of any size, mainly smaller entry-level and first-time buyer homes," Jenkins says. At the beginning of 2025, the median price of a home here was $440,000 and listings spent an average of 25 days on the market before selling. Single-family homes range from about $350,000 to $550,000, while multifamily properties and manufactured homes rarely exceed $230,000. "Foothill Farms has been steady with housing prices trailing behind other cities in the area," Jenkins says.

Attending Foothill High School

Foothill Farms is zoned for Twin Rivers Unified School District, which serves more than 24,000 students in Sacramento County and receives an overall B-minus Niche rating. The Foothill Farms community is home to several of the district’s schools, including Foothill Ranch Middle School and Foothill High School, which has an 86% average graduation rate according to Niche. Foothill High also offers career and technical education and elective courses in the arts and theatre.

Foothill Farms has eight community parks

The Sunrise Recreation and Park District oversees public parks and related facilities in Foothill Farms. Foothill Farms has eight parks; the largest is the 25-acre Foothill Community Park. Cabana Dog Park offers pet owners a gated off-leash space with exercise ramps and dog washing stations, and the Foothill Golf Course has a 9-hole layout across well-maintained fairways. When the Central Valley summer heat kicks in, residents have plenty of nearby indoor gym options. Only 2 miles from Foothill Farms is the popular Scandia Family Fun Center, an amusement park with rides, a miniature golf course and an arcade.

Convenient local shopping centers

There are several places in Foothill Farms with shopping and dining options. "Anything you need or want is readily available, or it’s just a short drive to a large mall," Jenkins says. Elkhorn Center has various eateries, Goodwill and European Delicatessen, a specialty food market with gourmet products. At the other end of town is the Elkhorn Plaza shopping mall, which has a Safeway supermarket, a CVS and a Dollar General where residents can browse discount items. Big box stores like Walmart and national retailers like Kohl’s can also be found throughout the community. Cinemark Century Theaters is a local theatre with luxury reclining seats; the theater also has a large arcade with games like claw machines and air hockey.

Immediate access to Interstate 80

Interstate 80 is the main thoroughfare running through Foothill Farms. Commuters can take I-80 to downtown Sacramento or travel 8 miles in the opposite direction to Roseville. Residents who live close to the interstate may hear highway noise, especially during periods of heavy traffic. Local bus lines are operated by Sacramento Regional Transit; buses stop at shopping centers throughout Foothill Farms. Sacramento International Airport is 18 miles away.
