Once a military outpost, Fort Loudon is rural hideaway in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains.
Nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, Fort Loudon is named after a military installation built to protect English settlers during the French and Indian War. The area mainly saw incursions from Native American raids, but in 1765, the fort was put under siege by James Smith and his ‘Black Boys,' a group of settlers who attacked English trade caravans in the area. A replica of the fort now stands and acts as a site for historical reenactments. Fort Loudon now gives homebuyers a choice of small-town life or large properties with views of the nearby mountains. “It's a very small town, but the outskirts of it have lots of wooded areas, so it's private where homes are,” says Jeanie Sipes, a real estate agent with Palmer Realty.
