A rural atmosphere in proximity to numerous large Northern Colorado cities
On the eastern banks of the South Platte River, Fort Lupton is a North Colorado city with a small-town vibe and easy access to nearby metro areas. Around 28 miles from Downtown Boulder and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the city is known for its preserved historic architecture and proximity to outdoor recreation. “One of the appealing things about Fort Lupton is that it's accessible to numerous large cities,” says Jody Malone, a local Realtor with Teater Realty Co. “There aren’t many large employers in Fort Lupton, so most residents commute to Denver, Brighton or Boulder for work, but they choose to live here for the lower prices and the quiet atmosphere.”

Historic downtown and major Weld County employers
Historic buildings along Denver Street and surrounding residential blocks date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with Fort Lupton’s Historic Preservation Board overseeing the upkeep of historically designated buildings.
Fort Lupton was founded as a fur trading post in the 1830s before it became a gold rush outpost and, in the early 1900s was developed as a profitable agricultural community. Today, Fort Lupton is the second largest city in Weld County, with a population of roughly 9,500. While agriculture remains a large focus in the city, some of the area’s largest employers include Halliburton Energy Services, A&W Water Service and the Weld School District Re-8.

As of 2025, there are numerous new developments underway, including the Cottonwood Greens, Vista Meadows and Willow Crossing neighborhoods.
The median home price is $467,000, which is lower than both the Weld County and Colorado averages. “Here, you can get much more for your money in terms of square footage and acreage,” Malone says. “There are established homes on multiple acres, as well as more uniform modern subdivisions.”
