Why Aboite is a good place to live

Aboite is a suburban township on the southwestern end of the Fort Wayne area. The community offers highly-rated schools, plenty of recreation and quick access to essential services. There is a trail system here that draws anyone from casual joggers to people biking to work, while some neighborhoods are close to shopping centers with grocery stores and restaurants.

What kind of homes and neighborhoods are in Aboite

Aboite has several smaller neighborhoods and subdivisions, where the houses include New Traditionals, modern Craftsmans, Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes. Buyers may find some extra space, as several lots here are over 1 acre. There are some luxury builds like The Hamilton, a multimillion-dollar European-style mansion with stone siding and lavish landscaping. Many roads have sidewalks that some residents use for daily walks, while a few neighborhood ponds off Bass Road serve as fishing holes.

Larger homes may go from the low $400,000s to the upper $800,000s, while some that are over 6,000 square feet run between the low $700,000s and $2.1 million.

The area offers plenty of recreation

The Aboite Trails System is one of the area’s popular amenities. The network has over 20 miles of trails that cross hilly landscapes and connect to other paths that lead to places like downtown Fort Wayne. “They’re [trails] on the main corridors of Aboite, so it’s kind of nice. You can ride your bike and walk to a lot of the different locations: The Y, the schools, the neighborhoods, the churches [and] shopping,” says Leslie Ferguson, co-owner of the Regan & Ferguson Group. “It’s a big selling point for Aboite.”

Stops along the trails include Indian Trails Park, which has various sports fields and courts and a large playground. The nearly 70-acre park is home to the Jorgensen Family YMCA, where facilities include a weight room, a walking track, a climbing wall and both an indoor pool and an outdoor aquatic center. Other destinations include 18-hole courses at both the private and highly-rated Sycamore Hills Golf Club and the public Chestnut Hills Golf Club.

Several top-rated schools serve the community

Students may go to different elementary and middle schools, depending on where they live. Schools in the township include Aboite Elementary, Summit Middle and Homestead High, all of which are top-rated. Homestead offers dual-credit courses and has a strong student media program. In 2025, the school won well over 20 awards in a major state school broadcasters conference. The awards covered areas like radio talk shows, podcasting and photojournalism.

The community stays close with various events

In June and July, Indian Trails Park hosts Concerts on the Green. The weekly series brings in various regional rock bands, some of which specialize in covering oldies and classic hits. Holiday activities include a free Trunk or Treat in October at the Jorgensen Family YMCA. “It’s a really, really friendly community,” Ferguson says. “Your neighbor turns out to be your best friend. When I tour people from out of town, and we stop at Starbucks, they’re like, ‘Oh my God, everyone just said hi to you. Do you know them?’ I’m like, ‘no, people are just that friendly.’”

Dining and grocery shopping are within easy reach

Aboite has a mix of chain and locally-owned restaurants:

  • Salvatori’s Authentic Italian Eatery is a regional institution.
  • Catablu Grille serves cocktails and high-end comfort foods.
  • Oley’s Pizza is known for its own version of the Chicago-style pie.
  • Don Hall’s Tavern at Coventry serves bar fare in an old-timey spot.
For groceries, the township has a couple of Kroger stores. “You’ve got all the services you need,” Ferguson says. “From quick shopping and the post office to, you know, kind of your everyday needs.”

The township is convenient for commuters and long-distance travelers

“Things are not as sprawly or as spread out as in other communities around Fort Wayne. It just takes you literally 10 minutes to get anywhere. You feel more connected, and the trail system helps with that,” Ferguson says. “It’s kind of in the middle of everywhere. It has easy access to the main corridors that get you to Chicago or Indianapolis.” People here are close to a few major roads and destinations:

  • Interstate 69 passes through the area and goes to Indianapolis.
  • U.S. Highway 30 goes to Chicago, about three hours away.
  • Downtown Fort Wayne is less than 10 miles away.
  • The Lutheran Hospital is in the township.
