A historic northern Fort Wayne community
Although it’s one of the smallest neighborhoods in Fort Wayne, Irvington Park has plenty of charming homes and natural beauty. As part of the Brookview-Irvington Park Historic District, the community is a showcase of homes with stories. “Irvington Park is an older, established neighborhood,” says Realtor Tracy Hale of Century 21 Bradley Realty, “but the historic home styles give this district a unique character.” Built in the early 1900s and listed on the national registry in 2011, the Brookview-Irvington Park Historic District has lots of early 20th-century architecture. Many of the district's homes were designed by Joel Roberts Ninde and Grace E. Crosby, who were among the nation's earliest female architects who made names for themselves with their "House of Convenience'' design practices. “There’s a whole range of historic homes here, from older early-century Craftsman to mid-century modern,” says Realtor Ian Barnhart of Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group.

Irvington is a compact neighborhood
Irvington Park is made up of six streets, tucked against the elbow of U.S. Route 27, a major byway through the city. Although the streets and sidewalks are worn, the residential plots adjacent them are well-kept. The lots are also more sizeable than other Fort Wayne suburbs, averaging around a quarter-acre. Tudor Revivals, Colonial Revivals and ranch-styles are the prevalent types of architecture, harkening back to the early 20th century when Ninde and Crosby envisioned and built homes designed with the needs of a homemaker in mind. A historic marker in Brookview Civic, the next neighborhood to the south, explains the women's contributions. The price range is equally noteworthy. “You can get a smaller starter home with 900 square feet for $150,000 or a Foursquare-style with four bedrooms for $400,000,” says Hale. This still holds true as of late 2024, with most homes selling for between $130,000 and $375,000.

Plenty of nearby outdoor fun in Irvington Park
The areas and attractions surrounding Irvington Park have just as much history. Situated immediately south of the neighborhood is Vesey Park, a stretch of 15 acres that was originally part of the Irvington Park plat. Efforts to landscape and refine the parcel started around 1912. Its open spaces and tennis courts make for a nice afternoon detour. The robust network of trails along the Rivergreenway is also heavily used. “The Pufferbelly Trail cuts through Irvington Park,” says Barnhart. “Hop right on there, and you’ll get to the zoo through the Rivergreenway, which crisscrosses our city.” The nearby Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is another must for family-friendly fun. “The zoo is well-known as one of the best in Indiana,” says Hale. “They have year-round events, like summer camps for kids and a Halloween party.” Right next to the zoo is Foellinger Theater, a covered, open-air theater in Franke Park. “The venue puts on theater shows and plays and will have some pretty well-known bands come through,” says Hale. Franke Park has the more usual amenities like a playground and a wide-open green space as well.

Residents make the quick trip downtown
Because of its 100% residential footprint, Irvington Park’s residents venture downtown for a meal and grocery shopping. Spots such as The Landing, a pedestrian strip featuring a modern mix of restaurants, bars and coffee shops, are popular. The same is true for nearby breweries, which attracts young adults. “Granite City has a relaxed atmosphere and serves microbrews that you don’t necessarily see in restaurants, and 2Toms Brewery pulls the younger crowd to its outdoor patio,” says Barnhart. Aldi lies a mile north for weekly grocery needs.

Commuting for work is fast
Irvington Park offers a corner filled with a storied history and vibrant character a few minutes from downtown. “What stands out here is the urban feel in a historic setting,” says Barnhart. “In addition to the proximity of downtown, it’s what makes this area so great.” In fact, residents can make their 2-mile commute in about six minutes with light traffic. The Citilink bus also serves the area, so a ride along the same route would last about 17 minutes. Fort Wayne International Airport is an 11-mile, 20-minute drive southwest.
Flooding in Fort Wayne
Flooding is occasionally an issue in Fort Wayne, with past decades having their share of intermittent property damage. Unsurprisingly, the risk is commensurate with a given community’s distance to one of Fort Wayne’s three intersecting rivers. One such neighborhood is Irvington Park, which lies adjacent to the Spy Run Creek and about 1,000 feet from the St. Joseph River.
