A small town near Northern California’s Pacific coast
Loleta offers a taste of small-town living in the flatlands between Pacific beaches and the redwood-covered mountains of Northern California. This rural village is home to about 500 residents and features a small commercial strip with a grocery store, an ice cream shop and a post office. “It’s a small, friendly town right outside Fortuna, and it has the best ice cream in the county in my opinion,” says Realtor Eliza Proctor of Re/Max Humboldt Realty, who has lived and worked in the area since 2017. The town and surrounding area are especially drawing young families and retirees who want to live near Fortuna, Proctor says.
A market and an ice cream shop on Main Street
Loleta’s Main Street is lined with old historic buildings that give it a quintessential small-town feel. There, residents can shop at Loleta Grocery, a little market that carries snacks and everyday essentials, or cool off at Jersey Scoops ice cream shop. The rest of the buildings on the strip are currently vacant, save for a post office, a realty office and a community services center. Bear River Casino Resort is just outside town on tribal lands, and features an array of games, slots and restaurants in addition to its hotel. For everything else, residents will have to make the short trek to Fortuna, about 5 miles east. It has a Safeway, an Ace Hardware store, a Walgreens and dining options that include everything from fast-food to independent restaurants.
