Cruise north on Route 15 and you’ll pass acre after acre of deep green, grassy fields. The occasional small business or country home might catch your eye as you head farther into Lewistown.

The biggest draw for home buyers here is “Peace and quiet, with lots of open space close to the mountains,” says Realtor Adam Light of Monument Sotheby’s. Most of Lewistown’s roads are unplanned, the only constant being Route 15, weaving through the countryside. Scattered throughout this wooded area are various ranch homes, split levels and duplexes. Brick facades are equally as typical as vinyl, with a more modest, no-frills sort of exterior. Though many homes you see in this neighborhood were originally built in the latter half of the previous century, “There’s a lot of new construction too,” says Light. These newer builds have three bedrooms and will fetch about $420,000 to $450,000. The more established homes average $350,000. As with most rural communities, lot sizes will vary, but even the smaller ones are generous.

Kids in Lewistown attend Lewistown Elementary, which Niche rates a C. Walkersville Middle earns an A-minus for diversity from Niche. When they reach Walkersville High, students can challenge themselves with several AP courses. The AP enrollment for kids at this school is 28%.

After a long day of school or work, residents can head to Utica Park in Lewistown’s center. The park is expansive, featuring a paved trail that winds from its northern end to its southern end. Locals use the soccer court to stay active and the tennis court to sharpen their serve, not to mention the two sandy volleyball courts. Sprinkled throughout the park are various picnic shelters to stop and catch your breath in the shade. To round out a day of play, fire up some meats on one of this park’s community grills. It’s open until 10:30, so don’t stress about rushing through dinner.

Provided you don’t mind an hour in the car, Harpers Ferry is a fantastic area to visit for weekend activities. Fifty miles is well worth it to experience the white-water rafting scene there, with options like family rafting, tubing and solo kayaking ventures. The historic town has numerous landmarks, like the famous John Brown House. Visitors can sign up for guided house tours and learn more about the area’s big names. Keep your eyes peeled since “The Appalachian Trail runs right through Harpers Ferry. You can watch the backpackers come through,” says Light.

Although you’ll need to leave the neighborhood for shopping, “Lewistown is close to Downtown Frederick and its amenities. It’s a very short drive,” explains Light. Frederick hosts unique businesses like The Little Pottery Shop, where you can grab that missing kitchen or living room curiosity you didn’t know you needed. Each month, The Artists’ Gallery hosts exhibitions of local artists’ works to browse. If you’re the type to stock up on groceries, check out McCutcheon’s Factory Store, which sells fruit preserves, honey, jellies and apple butter. Dozens more shops are within reach Downtown, so you’ll never want for anything. To wind down at the end of the week, head over to The Wine Kitchen for a glass of red or white. Their daily butcher's flight contains three steak samplings if you simply can't decide.

Quality shopping, rafting and even history lessons are nearby when you live in Lewistown. Buyers come for the amenities and stay for the privacy of their country homes.
