Reinvestment into Southwest Fresno
One of Fresno's oldest sections, Edison, composes a swath of the southwestern side of the city — a mixture of densely constructed residential corridors that lead out into open farmland. Historically a minority-driven community, the neighborhoods to the west of Highway 99 have struggled with being cut off from city resources and the decreasing air quality that came with industrialization in the area. Today, the city strives to right these wrongs with plans for new parks, prohibition of industrial development and an investment in economic growth. The Southwest Specific Plan, introduced in 2015, is working to address these goals, though some residents are frustrated with a lack of progress.

The opening of a new community college
One of the most significant changes in Southwest Fresno is the addition of West Fresno Center, a branch of the Fresno City College that opened in 2023. "The college draws people from all over, and it's bringing positivity back into the community," says Tasheana Scott, who grew up in the neighborhood and is now a student at West Fresno Center. With dual enrollment at local high schools, the college is a beacon of hope for all students in West Fresno. "My favorite part of the college is the counseling center because the counselors are really engaged and care about helping students," Scott says. "But even for people who aren't students, there's an information table with job postings and health care resources, as well as available computers."

Rural homes on urban streets
Most of the houses in Edison are midcentury bungalows and rural ranchers, many with the classic Mediterranean tiled roofs and stucco siding. Homes from $150,000 to $250,000 are usually from the mid-1900s, with less than 1,000 sq. ft. and spacious yards. Properties between $250,000 and $350,000 tend to be new builds or freshly renovated properties, with around 1,500 sq. ft. floor plans. Grids of sidewalks connect homes, and many yards are sectioned off by chain-link fences, giving the area a slightly urban feel despite the distance from the city's heart. On the rural outskirts of Edison, a few properties go for $600,000 for private estates with several acres of land.

Community centers every few blocks
"Edison is notable in its number of community centers," says Julie Fulcher, a realtor with Real Broker who has experience in the area. Sunset Community Center has a popular summer program for kids, allowing parents to head off to work knowing their kids are cared for all day long. The Frank H. Ball Center also has summer programs, after-school care, and a pool with a popular $1 children's swim program. The whole community comes together for a Juneteenth celebration at Frank H. Ball Park, and smaller events happen weekly throughout the summer. Over at the West Fresno Family Resource Center, there's an NBA-sized gymnasium and fitness center. This non-profit organization works to provide resources to Fresno's historically disadvantaged west side.

Public schools with a STEM focus
Neighborhood kids are part of the Fresno Unified School District. There are several elementary schools within Edison, so zoning depends on house location, but many kids attend King Elementary, which gets a C rating from Niche. Then it's on to Rutherford B. Gaston Sr. Middle, rated C as well. Alternatively, kids can apply to the STEM magnet school, Computech Middle School, which receives an A-minus rating. The STEM-based curriculum can be continued at Edison High School, right next door to Computech Middle. All students in the area are zoned to attend Edison High; no application is needed. The school is known for its strong academic culture and receives an A-minus rating.

Strip mall selections
Several small markets sit throughout the residential streets, and there is a larger FoodMaxx along Highway 99. The surrounding commercial strip is also home to some chain restaurants, the much-beloved Kimbo's Donuts and a few authentic Mexican restaurants. And for more options, downtown Fresno sits just across the highway.

Bus lines and college shuttle service
In addition to being close to downtown, Edison offers quick access to California State Routes 180, 99 and 41 — each one cuts through the neighborhood. The highways can be used for commutes to other parts of Fresno or out of town. Bus lines run along major streets, and a new shuttle service takes students from West Fresno Center to the central college.
