A palm-peppered community in south-central Fresno
Huntington is a mostly residential community with close access to area highways, neighborhood parks and local businesses. “Fresno has a lot of history, especially on that particular street,” says John Duncan, a Fresno-based Realtor with Atlantic & Pacific Real Estate and over 10 years of experience. Huntington Boulevard was once part of the Alta Vista Tract, a streetcar line platted in 1911; today, a wide, grassy lawn runs down the middle of Huntington Boulevard between rows of architecturally diverse houses built throughout the 20th century. “Even though the tracks have been gone for almost a century, the trolley system still defines that street and the whole neighborhood,” says Kevin Enns-Rempel, a resident and former member of the City of Fresno Historic Preservation Commission. “On any evening when the weather is amenable, countless people are out walking on Huntington and through the neighborhood,” Enns-Rempel says. Huntington Boulevard leads 6 miles west toward Downtown Fresno, and in the neighborhood, residents can shop at local mom-and-pop stores dotted along Ventura Avenue. The overall CAP Index Crime Score is 6 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4, and nearby houses of worship include First Armenian Presbyterian Church and Saint John’s Cathedral.

Ranch-style and early 20th-century homes
Non-historic single-family homes in Huntington range between $250,000 and $350,000, less than neighboring Sunnyside and Hoover, where homes often go for between $350,000 and $600,000. “The area could be for starter homes or an area to flip properties,” Duncan says. “A lot of people who flip homes will buy homes here.” Along palm-peppered streets, homes here are mostly ranch-style built through the mid-to-late 20th-century; lots up to 6,500 square feet are typical, allowing for front yards with grass lawns or drought-tolerant landscaping. A three-bedroom ranch-style home can start around $250,000, while a five-bedroom version can cost $350,000.
Along Huntington Boulevard, early 20th-century homes draw from an eclectic range of architectural styles, like Mediterranean or Tudor Revival; these homes can have quarter-acre lots and are generally priced higher than the rest of the neighborhood. “Huntington Boulevard is an area that, at one time, was for business owners and wealthy people who lived in Victorian-type homes. They were very large homes and still are.” A single-story, four-bedroom Tudor Revival on Huntington Boulevard can go for $500,000, while a two-story, five-bedroom Mediterranean-style home costs $800,000.

Living by the fairgrounds
The annual Big Fresno Fair is held at the Fresno County Fairgrounds in the neighborhood's center; since 1884, roughly 600,000 visitors flood the fairgrounds every October to enjoy festival food, games and music. “[The fair] doesn’t impact the neighborhood significantly,” Enns-Rempel says. “You can hear the sounds of the fair, and traffic on Cedar Avenue is affected, but that’s about it.” During the rest of the year, the Big Fresno Flea Market is held on the weekends at the fairgrounds, where residents can shop for fresh produce, handmade crafts and secondhand treasures from hundreds of local vendors.

Huntington is part of the Fresno Unified School District, rated B overall by Niche. Local kids can start at Jackson Elementary, rated B-minus, before moving on to Tehipite Middle, rated C, which offers an after-school program to explore topics like yearbook, coding and culinary arts.
