Ranch-style and early 20th-century homes
Non-historic single-family homes in Huntington range between $250,000 and $350,000, less than neighboring Sunnyside and Hoover, where homes often go for between $350,000 and $600,000. “The area could be for starter homes or an area to flip properties,” Duncan says. “A lot of people who flip homes will buy homes here.” Along palm-peppered streets, homes here are mostly ranch-style built through the mid-to-late 20th-century; lots up to 6,500 square feet are typical, allowing for front yards with grass lawns or drought-tolerant landscaping. A three-bedroom ranch-style home can start around $250,000, while a five-bedroom version can cost $350,000.Along Huntington Boulevard, early 20th-century homes draw from an eclectic range of architectural styles, like Mediterranean or Tudor Revival; these homes can have quarter-acre lots and are generally priced higher than the rest of the neighborhood. “Huntington Boulevard is an area that, at one time, was for business owners and wealthy people who lived in Victorian-type homes. They were very large homes and still are.” A single-story, four-bedroom Tudor Revival on Huntington Boulevard can go for $500,000, while a two-story, five-bedroom Mediterranean-style home costs $800,000.
Defying gravity at Mosqueda BMX Park
In Huntington’s northwest, Romain Park is best known for its outdoor skate park, which offers bowls, ramps and rails for skaters to conquer; the park also offers a pool, multiuse fields and a playground. To the southeast, Mosqueda Park is well-known for its BMX course; the 30,000-square-foot Mosqueda BMX Park gives adventurous residents plenty of room to burn calories while they brave the largest concrete cradle in the country and try gravity-defying tricks, like wall rides or fly-off jumps. Around the bike park, residents can shoot hoops on the basketball courts, aim for a home run on the baseball field or take a dip in the swimming pool.Home to an arts magnet school
Huntington is part of the Fresno Unified School District, rated B overall by Niche. Local kids can start at Jackson Elementary, rated B-minus, before moving on to Tehipite Middle, rated C, which offers an after-school program to explore topics like yearbook, coding and culinary arts. Teens attend the B-minus-rated Roosevelt High, where they can enroll in the Roosevelt School of the Arts, a magnet program for performing, visual and media arts. “If you’re into music or theater or anything like that, it’s a great school. If you want to get into medical, they have a program for medical students too,” Duncan says.Living by the fairgrounds
The annual Big Fresno Fair is held at the Fresno County Fairgrounds in the neighborhood's center; since 1884, roughly 600,000 visitors flood the fairgrounds every October to enjoy festival food, games and music. “[The fair] doesn’t impact the neighborhood significantly,” Enns-Rempel says. “You can hear the sounds of the fair, and traffic on Cedar Avenue is affected, but that’s about it.” During the rest of the year, the Big Fresno Flea Market is held on the weekends at the fairgrounds, where residents can shop for fresh produce, handmade crafts and secondhand treasures from hundreds of local vendors.A straight shot to downtown Fresno
Huntington’s major thoroughfares, Huntington Boulevard and Ventura Avenue, lead west toward Downtown Fresno, about 6 miles away. Routes 180 and 41 run along Huntington’s northern and western borders, granting easy access to the rest of Fresno County. Residential and commercial streets are typically walkable here, but Fresno Area Express buses are also available throughout the neighborhood. Community Regional Medical Center is about a mile west, and Fresno Yosemite International Airport is 4 miles northeast.Dining along Ventura Avenue
For groceries, residents head a couple of blocks east to Walmart; nearby, residents can also shop at El Super and Asia Market for Hispanic and Asian specialty ingredients, respectively. Local businesses and restaurants line Ventura Avenue, like Castillo’s Mexican Food, a family-owned eatery known for serving sizzling fajitas and flavorful chili verde since 1955. Nearby, Donut Queen offers coffee, pastries and breakfast fare, like croissant sandwiches. On the weekends, residents can pick up fresh produce from the Big Fresno Flea Market.
