Get away from it all in a remote seaside village
South of the Cape on Hatteras Island is Frisco, one of the last stops in the stretch of villages that make up the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This small beach town has a year-round population of only about 200, making it one of the smallest and most remote communities along the barrier islands. Frisco is considered quiet and uncrowded, even during tourist season. “There’s a bit of a lull in Frisco,” says Wendi Munden, a Realtor with NC 12 Realty who has lived on Hatteras Island for 25 years. “It’s actually a larger area, so it encompasses more, but it’s spread out. Some parts of it are all on the Pamlico Sound, and then further down is the oceanfront. There’s even a small airport down there.” Whether staying year-round or renting out their home for the season, residents of Frisco often have to travel to other Outer Banks villages for amenities and services. However, for some folks, that quiet, remote feel is Frisco’s best feature.

Beachfront homes are rare, but in high demand
Homes in Frisco are mainly situated along the sound shoreline or just off North Carolina Highway 12. Only a few homes here are directly on the beach, as much of the shore is bordered by protected woodlands and campgrounds as part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Nonetheless, these houses share much of the beachy style elements common on the Outer Banks, including spacious, multi-level balconies and homes raised on piling to lessen damage during flooding. Size and style vary, from quaint cottages and Cape Cods to sweeping, three-level properties right on the Pamlico Sound. An array of pastel colors lends character to some of these homes, while others go for the more traditional coastal look, with wooden shingle siding. Prices start in the mid-$400,000s and can climb to over $1 million. Some of the luxury properties at the upper end of this price range come with private pools or boat docks on the water. Although Frisco generally has fewer beach rentals than other villages, there is still a fair share of rental properties in the heart of town. Many visitors in this area end up staying outdoors in Frisco’s campgrounds. “Frisco has a higher ridge where you’re a little bit more elevated, whereas everything else is sea level, which means less flooding,” Munden says. However, hurricanes and nor’easters still affect life on the water, and home maintenance costs may be higher depending on the elevation levels and the salty sea air.

Quiet, remote beaches
“Coming into Frisco, there are no beaches, just some houses on the Sound access. Once you get towards the end of the village, that’s where you have the oceanfront and an off-road vehicle ramp where you can drive onto the beach,” Munden says. Frisco Beach, part of the Cape Hatteras National Shoreline, is known for its secluded feel. Even during tourist season, this area is quieter than the more crowded beaches in Kill Devil Hills, meaning there’s plenty of room to find a spot to lay down a beach towel and get some sun. “It’s not like some other beaches where there’s a boardwalk and a Ferris wheel,” Munden says. “The beaches are clean, wide-open and non-crowded. It’s definitely a quiet place that’s more catered toward families.” Frisco Beach is also popular for shelling and fishing, as the gently sloping ocean shelf allows beachgoers to wade 50 to 100 feet into the water. “There aren't a lot of lifeguarded beaches on the island, but there's one in Buxton and one in Frisco,” says Carla Reynolds, broker-in-charge at NC 12 Realty. “My kids are grown, so I don’t really have to worry about that anymore, but that’s important to know, especially for visitors.” On the opposite side of the island, the Pamlico Sound is ideal for kiteboarders and windsurfers seeking calm waters and steady breezes. For more land-based recreation, residents head about 7 miles east to Buxton’s Fessenden Center, which features playgrounds and sporting facilities.

A handful of amenities, with larger villages in reach
With its small-town feel, Frisco has relatively few amenities, though it does lay claim to the island’s only go-kart track. Frisco Market is a small convenience store that’s good for picking up last-minute essentials without having to travel to visit one of the larger grocers on the island. Frisco also has a gas station, a post office and specialty shops for outdoor gear and fishing rods. Most other essentials can be found in Buxton or Avon, roughly 7 or 14 miles away, respectively. For a good meal, however, there’s no need to leave the village. Frisco’s own Gingerbread Bakery and Pizza is popular not just for its handmade pies and pastries, but also for its whimsical atmosphere. The restaurant operates out of a Tudor-style cottage that has a true gingerbread house feel, complete with a fence topped with tiny gingerbread man cutouts. To cool off on hot days, folks head to Hatteras Sno-Balls and Ice Cream for a sweet frozen treat. This colorful beachy shack is covered in hand-painted signs and murals that convey the local eatery’s carefree attitude, featuring cheeky phrases such as, “If you are not barefoot, then you’re overdressed.”

A local museum retraces the island’s roots
Right off North Carolina Highway 12, Frisco’s most notable attraction is the Frisco Native American Museum. The museum is home to a collection of thousands of artifacts left behind by the island’s first inhabitants, with informative displays dedicated to the history of Hatteras Island and the local tribes who occupied it. Hidden behind the museum is a nature trail through the forest with educational signage posted alongside a large, scenic pond.

Dare County Schools are located one town over in Buxton, roughly 7 miles east, or a 10-minute drive away. Cape Hatteras Elementary scores a B-minus from Niche, while Cape Hatteras Secondary School houses middle school and high school students and receives a B grade. In March of 2024, Cape Hatteras Secondary School completed its pier on the Pamlico Sound, where students can engage in hands-on coastal studies learning.

Car and air traffic
North Carolina Highway 12, the major thoroughfare connecting the towns of the Northern Outer Banks together, runs straight through Frisco and makes navigating around simple. Kill Devil Hills, the most populous town in the Outer Banks, is approximately 65 miles or an hour and a half to the north. Hatteras is about 5 miles or 10 minutes east and runs a free ferry to Ocracoke, considered the furthest town in the Outer Banks. Although most folks here travel by car, Frisco is home to Hatteras Island’s only airstrip, the Billy Mitchell Airstrip. While it typically sees little traffic, pilots in possession of a plane can get a bird’s eye view of the island when they take off from this small public runway.
