An older Gainesville community that is still growing

The spirit of Porter's Community in Gainesville is best described through its centrally located neighborhood farm. Founded in the late 1800s, the community's original land was purchased by Dr. Watson Porter, a Black Canadian physician who encouraged locals to plant their own gardens and grow crops. "Porter's is a historically Black community that has an identity. There's a rich culture here," says Otis Garrison, the farm manager of Porter's Community Farm. "This place changed so much in a matter of 20 years." Due to its proximity to major hubs like downtown and the University of Florida, Porter's has been the subject of revitalization. Over the years, the area lost historic homes to off-campus student housing and downtown expansion. Many locals strive to connect the neighborhood's history to the present. "A part of what we do with our community farm is host a lot of students. From August to November, we have 20 to 40 students each weekend," Garrison says. "We also open up the garden to volunteers. Being a county native, it's important to highlight the history of Porter's and impart that on students."

A central community center and farm

Porter's Community Center stands at the heart of the neighborhood. The abutting grounds have a covered play area, basketball courts and benches underneath mossy oak trees. The center is available to rent for private events like birthday parties and family reunions. The neighborhood farm across the street offers a place to grow plants and community ties. "We have basic workshops for folks who have never grown anything and want to learn," Garrison says. "It's nice to have a growing farm as a tool to impact the community." The farm's programs focus on mushroom planting, identifying native plants and composting. Bordering the community is Depot Park, a large recreational space with trails and a promenade overlooking a pond.
