A mix of cottages and new traditional styles in Porter's Community
Porter's Community has a collection of homes from the 20th century to more recent houses built over the last five years. Many of the area's original homes were leveled to make room for new dwellings. However, the streets still contain worker's cottages from the first half of the 20th century. The My Neighborhood program, offered by the Gainesville Community Reinvestment Area, can help locals purchase houses and vacant lots. Fixer-uppers start as low as $100,000, while move-in ready homes and new constructions range in price between $225,000 and $300,000. The neighborhood is also zoned for multifamily units. Townhomes range from $150,000 to $200,000.Outdoor dining at 4th Avenue Food Park
The commercial district along Main Street and 4th Avenue contains local storefronts and industrial spaces. Grocery store options, Winn Dixie and Publix Supermarkets, are about 2 miles away. Downtown's eclectic businesses are displayed at the 4th Avenue Food Park. Here, locals can enjoy community restaurants such as Opus Airstream and SquareHouse Pizza while dining al fresco. The food park hosts events like the Vintage and Craft Faire and Jazz Night. 4th Avenue Food Park also hosts outdoor markets for local vendors.Visiting the landmark Shady Grove Primitive Baptist
Shady Grove Primitive Baptist Church, dating back to 1894, once held NAACP meetings during the civil rights movement. Today, the church still acts as a gathering place for community meetings. Following Main Street leads through downtown, intersecting along University Avenue. Although no bus stops are inside the community, commuters can find routes along Main Street and 2nd Avenue.A central community center and farm
Porter's Community Center stands at the heart of the neighborhood. The abutting grounds have a covered play area, basketball courts and benches underneath mossy oak trees. The center is available to rent for private events like birthday parties and family reunions. The neighborhood farm across the street offers a place to grow plants and community ties. "We have basic workshops for folks who have never grown anything and want to learn," Garrison says. "It's nice to have a growing farm as a tool to impact the community." The farm's programs focus on mushroom planting, identifying native plants and composting. Bordering the community is Depot Park, a large recreational space with trails and a promenade overlooking a pond.Learning in Alachua County schools
