A little bit of town and a little bit of country in Georges Township
Pennsylvania's rural Georges Township consists of small towns with neighborhoods alongside acreage properties on stretches of wooded land. "It's almost like a little village,” says Realtor Joanne Savini with Howard Hanna Myers. "It's spread out with a little bit of town life and a little bit of country life." She describes the community as "very friendly," saying that people talk to their neighbors and gather at community events like spaghetti nights and fish fries at local churches. What really attracts residents, she says, is the community's relatively low taxes. "All of the counties around us have much higher taxes," she says.
Single-family homes in neighborhoods and on acreage
Though this community has a wide variety of single-family housing options, some of its most common architectural styles are farmhouses, bungalows and manufactured homes. Some small bungalows and manufactured homes sell for under $100,000, but most homes sell for between $100,000 and $300,000. The township offers a mix of acreage properties and houses located in neighborhoods. Neighborhood streets typically have sidewalks, while streets with acreage properties do not.
Albert Gallatin Area School District and a private school
The Albert Gallatin Area School District gets a C-plus grade from Niche and is home to the B-minus-rated Smithfield Elementary School, the C-rated Albert Gallatin South Middle School and the C-plus-rated Albert Gallatin Area Senior High School. The high school has an Army JROTC, a ski club and a chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America. Students in the district can enroll in the Colonial Online Learning Academy for a completely virtual education experience. Georges Township is also home to Mount Moriah Christian School, a p-k-12 private school.
Hunting, fishing and Laurel Caverns
Laurel Caverns is Pennsylvania's largest cave, with 4 miles of paths and tours offered daily. State Game Lands Number 138 is nearly 3,000 acres of protected land popular for hunting, birdwatching, hiking and photography. Seghi's Five Lakes lets visitors fish in its small lakes that are regularly stocked with fish. Swaney's Roller Rink is a family-friendly indoor roller skating rink that hosts private parties. Smithfield Ballfield hosts the Smithfield Youth League for kids and teenagers playing baseball and softball. The area's natural scenery attracts visitors and residents alike: "If you come in the fall, it gets really pretty when the leaves change," Savini says. "Fayette County is known for its fall foliage."
A neighborhood bar, fast food and groceries
Goal Post Restaurant & Lounge is a casual neighborhood bar in Fairchance that serves American fare and offers activities like karaoke and pool. Fat Angelo's Pizzeria offers dine-in and delivery. There are a few other local bars and restaurants throughout the township, as well as a Subway and an Arby's. The township has two Dollar Generals and a Shop 'n Save for groceries. "Georges Township gives someone living there the opportunity to live outside the city and still have what they need to survive," Savini says.
Church events bring the community together
Savini says that the township's many churches act as community gathering spaces, often hosting events like fish fries and spaghetti dinners that welcome everyone. "It brings people together," she says.
