Laid-back, suburban living just west of Louisville
Georgetown, Indiana's quirky local businesses and drive-in theater make the neighborhood more than just a quiet suburb of Louisville. “Historically, Georgetown has been a bedroom community,” says Reny Keener, Georgetown Town Manager. “But it’s becoming a place where you can live, work and play.” This growing neighborhood draws in families and commuters who enjoy the pace of country living while having access to the city, which is just 14 miles to the east. "Since the town's early agricultural roots, it's grown a lot," says Matt Grossman, local resident and owner of The Piano Shop. "They're working on building a new restaurant next to the store right now and a new brewery is opening up right across the street," says Grossman, continuing on to explain that "We get calls all the time from people who just arrived from out of town and are moving to the area for a new job." As part of the greater Louisville metropolitan area, one advantage Georgetown has is its affordability. Because of its location in Indiana, residents enjoy "Less sales tax, better schools and a lower cost of living," says Grossman. Home to a quaint downtown and friendly, small-town community, many come to Georgetown to visit one of its small shops or restaurants, but often people stay for its relaxing lifestyle, peaceful, almost rural atmosphere and the convenience of having the city right next door.

Georgetown local options for shopping and dining
Although small, Georgetown’s downtown and surrounding areas have a diverse selection of locally-owned restaurants and stores. The Georgetown Bakery moved from the downtown area in 2022 to accommodate more indoor seating, but it remains a local mainstay, serving homemade doughnuts, pastries and American fare. The Piano Shop on Main Street is the Steinway & Sons piano dealer for Kentucky and Southern Indiana. It has a showroom with new and pre-owned pianos and offers lessons as well as moving, storage, tuning and maintenance services. To encourage more local businesses to move into Georgetown, “the town council and town’s redevelopment commission is open to offer incentives like tax abatements and facade grants for business owners” Keener says. Thanks to this program, residents can soon expect “a new brewery, butcher shop and fine dining establishment to open downtown.” In the meantime, residents can get groceries at the local Family Dollar or head over to Floyd's Knob to shop for groceries at the Jay C located there. For dinner in town, try El Nopal Mexican Cuisine and have a fun evening full of margaritas and authentic, home-cooked flavors. Stop by Lazy Sundaes ice cream shop afterward for a tasty dessert.

Whistlestop Stop Showcase and the Georgetown Drive-In
On Labor Day weekend, locals gather over four days at the Whistle Stop Showcase, a festival featuring a flea market, food vendors and a classic car show. Local organizations including Destination Georgetown, the Georgetown Optimist Club and the Georgetown Lions Club sponsor the popular event. Georgetown is also home to one of the region’s only drive-in movie theaters, which opened in 1951. Georgetown Drive-In regularly draws crowds on weekends during the warmer months with its two screens and retro-style snack area that hasn't seemed to change since the theater opened.

Eclectic Indiana homes with vintage charm
Surrounded by mature trees and quiet Indiana countryside, most housing options in Georgetown are single-family homes with lawns that feature minimal landscaping and, in more established parts of the neighborhood, large oak trees. In addition to quaint, early-twentieth-century homes along Main Street, the wider area has several newly constructed subdivisions that feature modern farmhouse and Craftsman homes, while ranch-style homes are also prevalent in slightly older areas. Kara Hinshaw, Realtor in Georgetown and surrounding Southern Indiana neighborhoods, explains that a major draw to Georgetown is that “it’s more affordable than Louisville and surrounding neighborhoods like Floyds Knob.” A new, three-bedroom modern farmhouse home in Georgetown typically costs in the low $300,000 range, though houses costing anywhere from $150,000 to $400,000 are common. With an average sales price of $335,000, Georgetown homes are about as expensive as those closer to Louisville at sale but come with more land. Whereas a single-acre lot close to the city is considered a steal, it's common for homes in Georgetown to sit on up to ten acres of land.

Getting around greater Louisville
Georgetown has no public transportation, so most residents get around by car. Louisville, Kentucky, is 15 miles from Georgetown, and according to local realtor Kara Hinshaw, “traffic is not that bad.” With Interstate 64 right next door as well, getting to the city or hopping on the Shawnee Expressway is no big deal. For those traveling out of state, the Louisville International Airport is just 23 miles southeast on the other side of the city. In the case of a medical emergency, residents can find the closest hospital, Norton Hospital, right in downtown Louisville as well.
