Rural living in Gerry, the "Rodeo Capital of the East"
Every summer, residents and visitors nationwide gather at the Gerry Volunteer Fire Department for four nights of bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, bull riding and a "famous" barbecue beef dinner. "Gerry is another one of Chautauqua County's rural communities," says Louis Dispenza, a local Realtor with Midtown Realty, who has been in the industry for almost 20 years. "But they draw in thousands of people every summer for their rodeo."The Gerry Rodeo was founded in 1945 when Jack Cox, a former western cowboy, spawned the idea as a fundraiser for the fire department, making it the oldest Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association-sanctioned rodeo east of the Mississippi River. As of 2025, over 200 professional riders from over 30 states make their way to this small town to compete for a grand prize of over $50,000. The event’s popularity has bestowed upon this small western New York hamlet the informal title of “Rodeo Capital of the East.” Less than 10 miles from the shores of Chautauqua Lake and Jamestown, the county's largest city, Gerry is a rural community that attracts residents looking for a slower pace of life, at least until the rodeo comes to town, transforming Gerry into "The Rodeo Capital of the East."

Harris Hill State Forest, lakefront retreats and other green spaces
Gerry's small Main Street is home to a local park with a playground, ball fields, a tennis court, a basketball court and a gravel parking lot. Five miles north, Sinclairville Village Park is another spot with sports courts, a playground and a baseball diamond. Down the road, Minckler Common is the village's gathering place for events like the Sinclairville History Fair, hosted by the Valley Historical Society located across the street. Golfing enthusiasts can enjoy a different kind of green at one of Chautauqua's many golf courses, such as Breezewood Golf Links, a nearby public 18-hole golf course. Other green spaces include surrounding state forests, nature preserves and state parks, and one of the greatest draws to the region is its year-round recreation. Harris Hill State Forest offers nearly 2,300 acres of rugged, wooded terrain open to the public for various recreational activities, including hiking, hunting, trapping and horseback riding. In the winter, wooded trails turn into a winter wonderland for snowmobilers, snowshoers and cross-country skiers. Several ski resorts are less than 50 miles away, including Holiday Valley Resort and Peek'n Peak Resort. In the summer, residents and visitors from across the country flock to Chautauqua Lake and Lake Erie for temperate waterfront escapes. Traditional RV and children's sleepaway summer campgrounds are scattered across the county. "We get a lot of tourists up in the winter for ice fishing and snowmobiling, but the summer is a whole different story," Dispenza says. "People come from all over for our lakes and the Chautauqua Institution." About 20 miles away, the Institution was founded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as part of a social movement emphasizing adult education and today offers adult learners the opportunity to attend thought-provoking lectures, classes and other events over a nine-week period every summer.
