Gibsonburg offers country charm with unexpected recreation
Newcomers to the village of Gibsonburg can expect the unexpected. Though located in north-central Ohio, the community has attractions like White Star Quarry, a popular place to swim and scuba dive. "You wouldn't think it, but it's been the place to go swimming or scuba diving lessons for a long time. My mother even went when she was growing up in Gibsonburg," says Realtor Kelli Weaver with Key Realty. In addition to its attractions, Gibsonburg has a growing market, where people buy to get a taste of country life. "We have a lot of older historical homes that people are purchasing and flipping to sell, which is bringing more people," Weaver says. "But we have some new homes too, so that you can have that charming character or a new build, we have both."
Cottages and bungalows near the center, ranch homes farther out
Gibsonburg features home styles from across the 20th century. The village features Mayberry-like streets, with sidewalks and tidy green yards lined with oak, maple, pine and myrtle trees. In the heart of the village, there are cottages, farmhouse-style homes, Craftsman-style bungalows and Four Square. According to Weaver, most of these older homes are being renovated and are priced between $50,000 and $200,000. Moving outward, there are ranch-style homes, split levels and even new construction, with prices usually between $200,000 and $480,000. Homes may include acreages, the closer they are to the surrounding farmlands and fields.
Gibsonburg offers quarry dives, wine festivals and fishing events
Gibsonburg's main attraction is the White Star Quarry Park. White Star is a former limestone, spring-fed quarry with a fishing pier, sandy beach and lifeguard-monitored swimming area. It's also incredibly popular with scuba divers, who can explore the clear waters of the quarry, which has visibility between 20 and 40 feet. White Star also has a playground and walking path that surrounds the quarry. Gibsonburg also operates a recreation area at Silver Rock Quarry, now a large fishing pond that's a popular spot to launch a paddleboard, kayak or canoe.
Williams Park has a playground, sports courts, and a walking loop that meanders across the grassy park and around its pond. The park is also home to many of Gibsonburg's events. "It's a pretty social community, with lots of celebrations and events that bring the community together," Weaver says. It's home to an annual Fishing Derby and Sculpture in the Village Arts and Wine Festival. This event puts a spotlight on Gibsonburg, showcasing local art, wine vendors and food trucks. Williams Park is a popular space for history buffs, as it's home to the Northcoast Veterans Museum and hosts the Old Timey Days Living History Weekend.
Career showcase connects students with local businesses
Gibsonburg Schools serves the village, starting with Hilfiker Elementary, which earns an overall B-rating from Niche. Students may then attend C-rated Gibsonburg Middle and B-rated Gibsonburg High. The school offers an annual THINK Manufacturing Career Showcase, where ninth-grade students participate in activities and projects run by local businesses.
Kirwin’s Super Market anchors a downtown with 20th century storefronts
The village has a modest downtown area along North Main and East Madison Streets. While some of the original storefronts are closed, a few restaurants, stores and municipal offices exist. Gibsonburg has an independent grocery store, Kirwin's Super Market, that has served the village since 1922. "People support small businesses here, like Kirwin's. It's one of the best grocery stores around, and it's really neat that it's been able to hold on," Weaver says. There are a few mom-and-pop eateries in town, like Madison Street Tavern, which has burgers and beers, and Oogie's Pizza, a parlor serving pies and subs. Fremont offers a Kroger, an ALDI and a Walmart about 10 miles away for more options. Bowling Green is 20 miles away, with retailers, restaurants, bars and grocery stores like Meijer. Nearby, White Stag Winery has small batch wines, small plates and live music.
