Quiet residential enclave in northwestern Gilroy
Las Animas is a residential suburb in Gilroy, a city known as the “Garlic Capital of the World” because of its notable crop production. The neighborhood’s name refers to the titular Spanish land grant that helped found the city back in the early 1800s; locals also refer to this area as Northwestern Gilroy or the Northwest Quad. “The advantage of the northwestern quad is the ease of commute,” says Lisa Faria, a local Realtor with Christie’s International Real Estate Sereno who has sold many homes in the neighborhood. “As many residents have to commute to work, they’re also near amenities and the desirable schools associated with the area.” Many people commute over 30 miles to work at companies in tech-centric areas like Silicon Valley, but the industry that’s helping drive Gilroy’s economy itself is agriculture. As commuters return from work in the heavily urban Bay Area, the surrounding landscape gradually transforms from concrete and crowded buildings to sprawling farmlands, wineries, and Santa Cruz Mountains foothills, which give Gilroy an open, rural feel. “I believe the atmosphere of a small town but with many amenities is what draws people here,” Faria says.

Homes from every decade since the 1940s up to now
Towering coniferous trees, a network of sidewalks and small but well-maintained front lawns line the winding residential streets and cul-de-sacs of Las Animas. Various housing options exist here; single-family homes range in build year from the 1940s to the present day, creating a mix of property styles reflecting all the neighborhood's decades past. Midcentury bungalows and ranch-style homes often range between $700,000 and $900,000. Homes with contemporary Craftsman architecture and newly built Mediterranean and Spanish Revival homes typically range from $1 million to $2.5 million; a few mansions and properties with more acreage have sold for higher. There are also a handful of townhouse complexes and apartment buildings in Las Animas, with units typically costing between $380,000 and $730,000. Compared to the greater San Jose metropolitan area, the home prices in this area are significantly more affordable, which means they're likely to be sold quickly after getting listed.

Taking the 101 and Caltrain into the Bay Area
Las Animas residents have easy access to Route 101 – or “the 101” as locals say. The highway runs north 30 miles to San Jose or a further 10 miles into Silicon Valley. “The number of residents that work and live in Gilroy is a dismal percentage compared to those commuting to work outside of Gilroy,” Faria says. The 101 travels south to connect with the city of Salinas, approximately 28 miles away. Using Route 25, which branches off the 101, people can drive about 15 miles south to get to Hollister. Faria notes that major employers in Gilroy and the surrounding area include the city’s school district, food manufacturing companies, local retail outlets, and wholesale businesses like UNFI and Costco. Almost everyone in Las Animas drives to get around, but the Valley Transportation Authority offers bus services through the neighborhood. A little more than a mile from Las Animas in downtown Gilroy is a station for Caltrain, which stops in cities throughout the Bay Area. The San Jose Mineta International Airport is a 35-mile drive away, while the Saint Louise Hospital and its 24-hour emergency services department are situated directly across from Las Animas on the other side of the 101.

Las Animas Veterans Park is a community hub
Most residents here are within walking distance of at least one outdoor recreation space. Most are small neighborhood parks with playgrounds, paved walking paths and picnic lawns. However, located in the middle of the neighborhood is the Las Animas Veterans Park, a 31-acre outdoor area and community hub offering many recreational amenities. People use the park’s grills and picnic areas to host cookouts, thrill seekers attempt the concrete bowl and skating features of the Las Animas Skatepark, dog owners flock to the Las Animas Dog Park and sports enthusiasts can play tennis or baseball at the park’s athletic facilities. Only 4 miles west of the neighborhood is the Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park, a seasonal horticulture-themed amusement park where rides, carnival games, entertainment venues, lush gardens and water parks are spread across 536 acres.

Shopping and dining along Hecker Pass Highway
Hecker Pass Highway acts as Las Animas’ southern boundary and is lined with an assortment of dining options, retail chains, gas stations, banks and grocery stores like Safeway and Nob Hill Foods. Faria says that two of the restaurants along Hecker Pass are some of the most popular in the city: Westside Grill is a family-owned pub-style restaurant that serves classic American fare, while Mama Mia’s down the road is a “family favorite with reasonable prices and consistently good food.” The menu at Mama Mia’s is full of Italian and Mediterranean options, including ravioli, paella and gnocchi dishes. For additional shopping, Faria says that residents can drive a mile into downtown Gilroy or 3 miles to a cluster of mall outlets with department stores like Target, Nordstrom and Marshalls.
