Glenburn is a quiet suburb of Bangor with space and small-town charm
About 10 miles outside of Bangor, Glenburn is a quiet town that begins where the city ends. Winding roads replace busy intersections and open landscapes offer residents a sense of space and seclusion. “What brings people here is the land. When they buy a home, they get a minimum of an acre or two, but it’s usually up to three or four acres,” says Karen Burns, a Glenburn resident and Realtor with Century 21 Queen City Real Estate. “People in Glenburn enjoy very quiet, peaceful living. There’s lots of land and wildlife galore.” As a tranquil suburb of Bangor, Glenburn gives residents a quiet place to return to after working, shopping or dining in the city. Its CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.
A mix of traditional homes and newer builds on roomy, tree-lined lots
Raised ranch-, traditional ranch- and Cape Cod-style homes are common in Glenburn. Some properties sit on spacious wooded lots in a country setting, while others are in residential subdivisions with a more suburban feel. The median lot size is about one acre, though residents typically have anywhere from half an acre to several acres. Newer construction built after the 2000s includes colonial-inspired and New Traditional homes. Waterfront cottages on Pushaw Lake rarely come on the market. Prices for single-family homes generally range from $150,000 for smaller builds to $550,000 for larger properties with more land. Mobile homes are typically less expensive, selling for $60,000 to $160,000.
Access to Bangor, city conveniences and major highways like I-95
Glenburn lacks sidewalks and public transportation, so residents rely on cars to get around. State highways lead south into Bangor, which offers city amenities not found in town. The city is home to Bangor International Airport, Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center and St. Joseph Healthcare, all less than 15 miles from Glenburn. Interstate 95 also runs through Bangor and continues about 75 miles southwest to Augusta.
Year-round recreation at Pushaw Lake, parks and a new ice-skating rink
Lakeside Landing Park offers a rocky beach, boat launch, wooden dock and picnic area on Pushaw Lake. It’s also home to the town’s annual Lakeside Summer Music Series. Gould’s Landing is a popular spot for paddling and fishing along Pushaw Lake’s southern shore, where bass are the most common catch. At West Side Park, residents can access a playground, swing set, basketball court and nature trails. When school is out, the playground, swing set and ball fields behind Glenburn School are open to the public. The school also hosts practices for the town’s youth sports programs, which keep kids active throughout the year.
Winters average over four feet of snow, and Glenburn plans to open a permanent ice-skating rink outside its town office in 2025, next to the basketball court previously used as a seasonal rink. Snowmobilers can join the Glenburn Lakeside Riders Snowmobile Club, and Hermon Mountain Ski Area offers skiing, snowboarding and tubing about 15 miles from town.
Students can attend Glenburn School and a high school of their choice
Glenburn School serves prekindergarten through eighth grade and earns a B-plus from Niche. It has a lower-than-average student-to-teacher ratio of 11-to-1, and students can gain hands-on experience with technology and problem-solving in its STEAM Lab. The school is also home to Glenburn Public Library. The district doesn’t have a high school, so it covers tuition for students in ninth through 12th grade to attend a public or private school of their choice. Common options include the B-plus-rated Bangor High School and A-rated John Bapst Memorial High School, a private college-preparatory school with day and boarding students. Higher education in Bangor includes Husson University, Eastern Maine Community College and the University of Maine’s Bangor Campus.
Local school is a hub for events like the Glenburn Community Festival
Glenburn School is both a place for learning and community events. Around Halloween, residents visit for the town’s annual trunk-or-treat night and to explore its spooky light trail that’s safe for all ages. In June, the Glenburn Community Festival offers a full day of fun at the elementary school with live performances, a craft fair, food vendors and more, ending with a fireworks show over the soccer field at dusk. Neighbors can also get together at Glenburn Christian Fellowship, which hosts weekly Bible studies.
A few small-town stores, but most shops and restaurants are in Bangor
Residents can grab essentials in town at Dollar General and Tocci’s Checkout Convenience Store, a one-stop shop for gas, grocery items and quick bites. Village Variety is another family-owned convenience store offering staples and casual eats. Most shopping and dining happen in Bangor, where the downtown area features local restaurants, and shopping centers include major retailers such as Hannaford, Home Depot, Walmart and Target.
