Parkway is a riverside community right next to the mall
Curving alongside the west bank of the Milwaukee River, Parkway is a small subdivision in the Milwaukee suburb of Glendale. Aside from its namesake elementary school, the North Shore neighborhood is mostly residential. But Bayshore — Glendale’s open-air mall — is just over the river and past the highway. For those working locally, Parkway is also closer to the car dealerships and manufacturers on Green Bay Avenue. “Glendale has a lot of car dealerships, and it offsets the taxes a little bit, so they aren’t as high as the other communities,” says Glendale resident Florence Carneol, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Commercial Realty.
Cape Cods and ranch-style homes along the river in Parkway
Most houses in Parkway are Cape Cods and ranch-style homes. Wide, tree-lined streets lead to narrow driveways, where homeowners park in attached and detached garages. Some homes border the river, offering water views and private fishing spots. Home prices typically range from $200,000 to $420,000 — less expensive than nearby communities like Nicolet and River Edge. Because of Parkway’s location along the Milwaukee River, the water level can be an issue after big storms. Flooding is infrequent; however, in August 2025, abnormally heavy rain caused flooding and property damage across Milwaukee, including in Glendale.
Walkable schools and technical programs at the high school
For kindergarten through third grade, kids head to Parkway Elementary School, the community namesake. The school is within walking distance of most homes, and it receives a B-plus from Niche. Glen Hills Middle School receives a B rating, and A-rated Nicolet Union High School has a technical lab, where students can study manufacturing, auto mechanics and robotics.
Local restaurants and shopping at Bayshore mall
The Brick Pub and Grill is a popular American spot serving burgers and sandwiches. “It’s a sports bar, and they have a front and back patio. That’s where everybody congregates for sports games,” Carneol says. Bavarian Bierhaus is a brewery and restaurant, offering a mix of American and German menu items in a dining room designed to look like a traditional German beerhall. Of course, there’s German beer on the menu, too. About a miles away on the other side of I-43, Bayshore includes retailers like Nike, Old Navy and Barnes & Noble. “The mall has a bowling alley and a theater, but you have to go through the mall to get to them,” Carneol says. Target and Trader Joe’s are both at the mall, and Sendik’s Food Market is about a mile away.
The Milwaukee River, Oak Leaf Trail and local parks by Parkway
The Milwaukee River is a popular fishing spot, where fishermen catch salmon during the right season. The paved Oak Leaf Trail goes through the community, running 135 miles as it connects with the rest of Milwaukee. Richard E. Maslowski Glendale Community Park has an inclusive, accessible playground and a baseball diamond. “It has a stage there and live music in the summer,” Carneol says. It is also home to its own beer garden, Sprecher Brewing Outdoor Oasis. Lincoln Park, just south of the community, has a kayak launch along the river. In summer, the David F. Schulz Aquatic Center’s pool and lazy river are open.
Taking the bus or I-43 around Parkway and Milwaukee
Buses stop along Silver Springs Drive and continue to Bayshore. I-43 links commuters with downtown Milwaukee, about 7 miles away. While the river is between the thoroughfare and the homes, noise from the traffic might still be audible to Parkway residents. Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is about 14 miles away. Aurora Urgent Care is in Glendale, about 3 miles away, but more healthcare services are available at Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital-St. Joseph, about 6 miles from Parkway.
Traditional Oktoberfests and summer concerts in the park
Bavarian Bierhaus hosts Milwaukee’s Original Oktoberfest. Like the traditional Munich Oktoberfest celebrations, it starts in September and includes beer, pretzels, polka music and people dressed up in traditional garb. Rhythm Nights brings live music to the community park on Thursday and Saturday evenings from July to September. The Fourth of July Celebration takes place in Kletzsch Park, where there’s a parade, food trucks and live music.
