In the Borough of Glenolden, you get the extra living space of a suburb with the high energy of city life. Located just three miles from Southwest Philadelphia, this Delaware County borough features busy main roads full of retailers and local restaurants surrounded by residential areas with a variety of homes.

Throughout Glenolden, you’ll mostly find single-family houses built between the early to mid-1900s. They’re typically fixed on modest lots up to a quarter-acre, providing a bit more yard space than a typical home in the city. American Foursquares are the most common style, though you’ll come across other architectural designs such as Dutch Colonials and ranch-styles, all typically selling from $250,000 to $450,000. While single-family homes are predominant in Glenolden, you’ll also find some twins and row houses that add a touch of urban living to the suburb, ranging from $200,000 to $350,000. But unlike in the city, these attached homes come with off-street parking.

“You drive down the street, and you have all of these places to shop and eat,” says David Coffey, Realtor with Keller Williams Main Line. “It’s nice because they’re all local restaurants. That’s what makes it pop.” Coffey, who lives in nearby Ridley Park, says he visits Glendolden all the time to eat at The Fainting Goat. Open until midnight or later every day, the hip gastropub is a popular spot for locals to hang out while enjoying live music over drinks and pub grub, like their famous pierogis. You’ll also find small shopping centers with other restaurants like Not Just Wings, which, of course, is not only popular for its wings, but also its cheesesteaks. Most restaurants are located along Chester Pike and MacDade Boulevard, along with big retailers like Walmart and ShopRite where you can get all your shopping done.

According to Coffey, many people who leave the city and move to Glenolden for the public school system. Kindergarten through eighth-grade students attend Glenolden School, rated a B by Niche. They go on to B-rated Interboro High School, which serves students from Glenolden and other surrounding boroughs and townships. Interboro broke ground in 2023 on a $73 million renovation and addition project, which includes new science labs, STEAM classrooms and more. The school is also notable for producing former Philadelphia Eagles player Vince Papale, whose story made it to the big screen through the hit Disney film Invincible.

Kids interested in playing sports can join the Glenolden Youth Club, which offers several leagues, all played at Glenolden Park. As parents cheer on their children, others visit the park to contribute to the community garden, run around the playground, play tennis or enjoy a nature walk by the creek. Nature enthusiasts can also head three miles to John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum. With 10 miles of trails through 1,000 acres of preserved woods and creeks, you’ll want to bring your binoculars to catch glimpses of the hundreds of species that live there, including bald eagles.

Being so close to Philadelphia, you can drive three miles and be in city limits. If you’re heading to Center City, it’s about a 15-mile drive, or you can take a 30-minute train ride from SEPTA’s Glenolden Station. If you’re a frequent flyer, you’ll enjoy the convenience of Philadelphia International Airport, just five miles away. You’re also just two miles from access to Interstate 95, making Glenolden a haven for commuters.
