One of Gloucester's more desirable neighborhoods
Sitting just beyond the downtown area, East Gloucester is surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean, creating a residential community filled with large homes and picturesque views. While a bit more spread out than other parts of the city, the quiet roads keep the area connected to nearby shopping and dining and provide streamlined routes to beaches and parks. When the day is done, residents can return to their homes styled with classic New England architecture, from smaller Cape Cods to towering three-story Colonial Revivals. “East Gloucester is probably the most desirable area, especially in terms of homes and property value,” says Mark Vadala, a lifetime resident of Gloucester and broker with Vadala Real Estate. “There is a lot to love about it.”

Historic coastal Cape Ann homes
The housing market in East Gloucester is one of the main draws to the community, with plenty of choices for homebuyers to pick from. There are smaller ranch-styles and Cape Cods just a short distance from more prominent Colonial Revival and New Englander homes. Many come with coastal views, and some even have their own private water access. Most houses were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s and are situated on larger lots, creating plenty of green space for gardens and patios. Two- and three-bedroom homes commonly cost from $500,000 to $900,000, and larger homes with four or more bedrooms can cost between $1 million and $5 million.

Good Harbor Beach and Bass Rocks Golf Club
Good Harbor Beach's rolling dunes and marshes create an ideal place for residents to either soak up the sun or splash around in the water. The waves are small enough to attract swimmers of all levels. “It's the most popular of all the beaches in Gloucester,” Vadala says. Just a short drive from the beach is the private Bass Rock Golf Club, an 18-hole golf course established in 1896. “It’s a beautiful course,” Vadala says. It's super hilly and known for its views of the waterfront and the grounds.” The Marble Road Conservation Area is just south of the country club for trails and hiking, offering spots for bird watching or picnics underneath the foliage.

Local brunch and Neapolitan pizza options
A nearby dining option, Short & Main, is a contemporary restaurant that Vadala says is well-known for its variety of Neapolitan pizzas. Locals can also dine closer to home at Zeke’s Place, where breakfast specials like waffles and French toast are served in a warm, art-filled environment. Residents can shop for groceries at the local Market Basket or the Cape Ann Farmers Market every Thursday from June to October.

Main Street and nearby commuting options
Main Street connects homes along the shore to the dining and shopping options downtown. “Having a car certainly helps in East Gloucester, but it is still fairly easy to walk the dog or bike around the community.” Residents are close to the Yankee Division Highway and the Gloucester commuter rail station to easily reach downtown Boston. Boat owners have multiple marinas in the neighborhood, such as East Gloucester Marine and Beacon Marine Basin Inc. The Addison Gilbert Hospital is less than 3 miles from the neighborhood, and Boston Logan International Airport is 36 miles away.
Waterfront Gloucester events
St Peters Fiesta, held in June, is one of the larger events started by an Italian fisherman who called Gloucester home. The event is filled with carnival food, rides, ceremonial parades, and a boat horn blow. The community comes together again in August for the Gloucester Waterfront Festival, an event with over 200 unique local and national vendors, demonstrations, games and a variety of food.
