Gloucester Point offers residents a coastal oasis with many waterfront activities and quick access to Yorktown, just 2 miles across the York River. “The area has lots of eclectic art and stores since there’s an art school nearby,” says Tracy Foster, a Realtor with the Virginia Peninsula Association of Realtors, who has three decades of experience and has lived in the area her entire life. While the Bay School Community Arts Center is 27 miles away in Mathews, its impact is still felt. “The neighborhood is very rural but isn’t crowded or densely populated compared to other areas.”

Homes

Waterfront living is an integral part of Gloucester Point, with Cape Cods and ranch-style homes with large, grassy lawns ranging from $300,000 to $400,000. There are also craftsman homes ranging from $450,000 to $500,000 with wooded yards and pebbled driveways. Colonial homes in the neighborhood range from $650,000 to $830,000 and have large, woodsy yards. “It's really a mixed bag in Gloucester Point,” says Foster.

Health Sciences Academy at Gloucester High

Kids in the area fall under the Gloucester County School District, which has a C-plus from Niche. Children can attend Botetourt Elementary School, which has a B and may advance to Page Middle, which has a B-plus and a student-to-teacher ratio of 13-to-1. Students can move on to Gloucester High, which has a C-plus and offers a Governor’s Health Sciences Academy.

Waterfront fun on the York River

The York River is a popular waterfront location for kayaking and fishing. “People also go to the Beaverdam Reservoir for paddleboarding,” says Foster. Golfers head to the Gloucester Golf Course to practice their swing. Skaters visit the Brown Park Skate Park, which is 12 miles away, to practice their kickflip.

Getting around in Gloucester Point

Residents drive down U.S. Route 17, also known as George Washington Memorial Highway, to get around town and to get to neighboring cities like Yorktown. Public transportation is available through the Bay Transit Express bus. The Newport/Williamsburg International Airport is 11 miles away.

Date nights on Yacht Haven Road

Locals head to Juan's Mexican Cafe and Cantina for authentic tacos. The York River Oyster Company is a popular spot for date nights, offering guests fresh seafood and waterfront views on Yacht Haven Road. Residents visit the Food Lion, located in the York River Crossing Shopping Center, for grocery and hygiene items. The York River Crossing Shopping Center offers residents a Home Centric, where guests can shop for holiday décor, and a movie theatre.

Oyster festivals on Virginia Street

The area hosts the annual Urbanna Oyster Festival along Virginia Street in the fall, which offers live music, food and art vendors and fire-throwing acts. On the weekends, residents visit Downtown Gloucester, which is 13 miles away, for shops and boutiques. “The area is sort of a little hidden secret, but there’s still access to lots of stores,” says Foster.
