Country feel in the Pensacola suburbs

Around 15 miles north of downtown Pensacola, Florida, lies Gonzalez, a growing suburban locale where residents enjoy a taste of country living with amenities just around the corner. “The Gonzalez area has a real homey feel where neighbors look out for neighbors. It’s the kind of place where people still talk to each other when they’re walking to the mailbox,” says Stacey Rising, a former Gonzalez resident and a broker associate with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Main Street Properties. “With Pensacola growing and everything moving more north, there’s a lot more restaurants and retail out there now, but Gonzalez still has a very country feel to it.”

Ranch-style homes on large lots

Home styles in the Gonzalez area vary from modern traditional to newly constructed bungalows to brick ranch-style homes built in the 1970s and 1980s. Some homes are built on ample lots of a quarter acre or more, while interior sizes range from around 1,000 to 3,200 square feet, and list prices fall between $180,000 and $650,000. “There are larger lots out in Gonzalez,” Rising says. “People like the breathing room they get with the bigger lots, and since Covid, everybody wants land.”

Highly desirable Escambia County schools

Gonzalez area children attend schools in the Escambia County School District, including Pine Meadow Elementary, rated a B by Niche, and Ransom Middle, which earns a B-minus rating. Next, students move to J.M. Tate Senior High, considered the No. 3 best public high school in Escambia County and given a B-plus by Niche. According to Rising, the schools are highly desirable, and as a former Ransom Middle School math teacher and parent of children who attended Gonzalez area schools, she should know. “The schools are one of the biggest things the area has going for it,” Rising says. “People want to plant roots and raise their kids in an area with a good school district.”

Recently renovated Ascend Park

For some quality outdoor time with the kids, there’s the recently renovated Ascend Park, which Hurricane Sally damaged in 2020, where visitors enjoy new playground equipment, including slides, swing sets and a toddler-friendly play structure. Soccer players and pet owners love Ashton Brosnaham Park with its 13 soccer fields and fenced dog park with separate areas for small and large dogs. For those who enjoy an afternoon out on the fairways, nearby Cypress Lakes Golf Club’s 18-hole course is open to the public, and golfers can book a tee time online. With Gonzalez's relatively low CAP Index crime score - a two out of 10 - residents can rest easy during an afternoon at the park or on the golf course.

Dining on Highway 29

For dining options, Gonzalez area residents look no further than nearby Highway 29 – also known as Pensacola Boulevard – or East 9 Mile Road, where there are numerous fast-casual and chain restaurants, including Whataburger and Lost Pizza Co. Jimmy’s Grill on Pensacola Boulevard is a popular spot where locals enjoy down-home country cooking. “Jimmy’s is famous for its liver and onions,” Rising says. “Their food is literally like your grandma’s cooking.” Also, along those two major thoroughfares, folks will find a multitude of retail establishments, including grocery stores like Winn-Dixie and Walmart Neighborhood Market.
