Good Hope has quiet rural living with access to Atlanta
The town of Good Hope is a rural community located about 55 miles from Atlanta. Its roughly 340 residents enjoy large, newly built homes on big lawns with no HOAs, a quiet, rural lifestyle and proximity to city amenities. Mark Myers, managing broker with Myers Team Realty who sells throughout the Atlanta metro area, says locals call it “going to Mayberry” when they move there from larger cities. “There are a lot of nice homes out there, it’s still secluded and private and you’re close enough you can be in Atlanta and Athens pretty quickly,” he says.
Spacious homes on large lots with room for hobby farms
Homes in Good Hope are a mix of New Traditional, ranch-style, manufactured and older bungalows. They sit on grass lawns, which sometimes span multiple acres and are surrounded by tall trees. Despite growing slowly over the past few years, there is still plenty of room. “You’re not crammed in little subdivisions like sardines. There’s still a lot of space and scenery,” Myers says.
Residents with big properties often use the land for hobby farms or hunting. Prices range from around $430,000 to around $700,000, with higher priced homes often built in the 2020s and spanning more than 2,000 square feet. Land is also available, ranging from around $190,000 for five acres to $250,000 for almost 10.
Students can attend Harmony Elementary through Monroe High
Walton County School District serves the town, rates an A-minus on Niche and offers school choice mainly through transfers and out-of-zone enrollment, with parents providing transportation. Placement depends on principal approval and district policy, not a lottery. There are no magnet programs. Kids can attend B-minus-rated Harmony Elementary, B-rated Carver Middle and B-rated Monroe Area High. Students at Monroe Area High can join clubs and organizations, including Environmental Club, Art Club and the local chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America.
Two local parks offer playgrounds, pavilions and open fields
There are two parks in town: one behind the Sherrif’s office and the other on the southeast side on Nunnally Shoals Road. Both feature playgrounds, picnic pavilions and open fields dotted with trees. About 7 miles away in Monroe, there are additional green spaces including the popular Childers Park, which features a dog park and walking trail, and Monroe Golf & Country Club, which offers a semi-private course.
Good Hope is also just 14 miles from Hard Labor Creek State Park, a large outdoor recreation spot that Myers says not many people know about. “It’s sort of like Georgia’s best kept secret. It’s not crowded like other state parks,” he says. The almost 6,000-acre park has campsites, horse stables and an equestrian riding ring, a playground, and water for fishing, boating and swimming.
Essentials in town with more shopping and dining in Monroe
Residents pick up groceries and essentials at Dollar General and Good Hope General Store. For more shopping and dining, residents head to Monroe’s quaint downtown area which offers many local boutiques and restaurants. Le Gabrielle Crepes & Waffles is a favorite breakfast and brunch spot, and many head to The Thirsty Moose for its burgers, flatbread pizza and simulation games played at the table. Big box stores like Walmart, Home Depot, Harbor Freight, chain restaurants and services are located throughout the rest of the city.
Residents gather for the annual Poppy Festival
The community gathers every year for the Good Hope Poppy Festival, which celebrates the work of Moina Michael, a Good Hope resident born in the late 1800s who raised funds for World War I veterans by selling red silk poppies. The day-long event features vendors, family-friendly activities and plenty of poppies.
State Route 83 connects Good Hope to nearby services
Residents geta round by car, since Good Hope doesn’t have a fixed bus line. State Route 83 runs through town and connects to nearby communities and the closest hospital, Piedmont Walton, located in Monroe. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International is the closest airport, about 55 miles away.
High winds and rainstorms can affect the area in hurricane season
While Good Hope is located inland, it can still experience high winds and major rainstorms associated with hurricanes. Walton County has resources on its website to help locals stay prepared for major storms.
