Goodrich combines a quiet lifestyle with city access
Goodrich is a small village with about 2,000 residents on the outskirts of Genesee County. “It’s tucked away and peaceful, but you’re only a short drive away to Grand Blanc, Flint or even the Oakland County border,” says Realtor Christine Champlin with Re/Max, who has lived in the area for 35 years. “People get the best of both worlds — rural living with suburban convenience.” Along with amenities outside of the community, Goodrich also has highly rated schools and many recreation spaces without having to leave town.
Both rural and suburban residential neighborhoods
Buyers will find a mix of single-family Cape Cods, ranch-style homes and New Traditional houses. On the outskirts of the village, properties offer plenty of space to spread out. “There are larger lots, rolling landscapes and homes that feel a little more country than what you’d find in the build-up areas of Genesee County,” Champlin says. Closer to the center of the village, streets have a suburban feel with densely packed lots, modest lawns and what Champlin describes as a “front-porch community atmosphere.” While the median sales price hovers around $375,000, older homes needing restoration can start in the $100,000s, and large properties — especially those with acreage or lakefront views on Shinanguag Lake — can exceed $800,000.
Goodrich Area Schools score in the B range
Public education in the village is well rated. “Goodrich schools consistently rank among the best in the county, which is a huge draw for families,” Champlin says. According to Niche, the district ranks No. 4 out of 36 in the Flint area. Reid Elementary for prekindergarten through first grade earns a B-plus from Niche. Oaktree Elementary for second through fifth grade and Goodrich Middle also score B-plus ratings. B-rated Goodrich High offers numerous extracurricular activities, including a robotics club and a Quiz Bowl team that competes against other schools.
Local parks with water and land activities
There are plenty of outdoor recreation areas in the village. Despite no dedicated launch, residents can kayak, canoe and fish in the Goodrich Millpond. In the heart of town, the Goodrich Commons provides a gathering place with a playground and basketball and tennis courts. It also has open green space for events, including the Good Times in Goodrich Festival each August, where antique car shows, live music and vendors bring people together. Atlas County Park nearby offers trails through the forests and marshland, and the Ortonville State Recreation Area, 8 miles away, is a popular spot for horseback riding, biking and hiking.
Village dining options and big-box stores in surrounding cities
Brick buildings on Hegel Road house small businesses and restaurants. The 411 Pub serves American classics, and Trio Tavern & Grill is popular for seafood and steak. State Road, a stretch of Michigan Highway 15, has additional options, such as ABeanToGo Coffee Roasters, which has dine-in and drive-through services. Dollar General sells everyday items, and Brown’s Do it Center provides hardware store needs. The nearest Kroger and other big-box stores are 7 miles away in Grand Blanc, and Bueches Food World is 5 miles away in Ortonville.
Navigating Genesee County and access to nearby medical care
Michigan Highway 15 is the main road through Goodrich. It leads to Interstate 69, 7 miles north. Interstate 75 is another major thoroughfare within 8 miles, leading to the Bishop International Airport in Flint, 17 miles away. Residents are within 9 miles of health care at the Henry Ford Genesys Hospital.
