Goodview is defined by its access to water and Winona
Goodview is a primarily residential community in Southeast Minnesota, located along the Mississippi River and Wisconsin border. The city notably sits adjacent to Winona , sharing many of its amenities. “They’re basically almost the same city. There’s no divide, you just roll from one city to the other,” says Matt Loos, a real estate agent with The Loos Team at Real Broker, who was born and raised in the area. Recreation is found on the water, at parks and usually within walking distance of most homes. “It’s just a nice neighborhood area where kids can ride their bikes in the streets. It’s a good, safe community,” Loos says.
A selection of traditional, single-family homes
Most homes in Goodview are lined along gridded neighborhood streets. “All the yards are really nice, and they’re pretty good sized," Loos says. "You’re not on top of your neighbor, so you get a good amount of space." Traditional single-story homes built between the 1940s and 1960s are common. Some are designed like Victorian cottages, while others are more Colonial Revival-inspired with simple vinyl exteriors and symmetrical windows. There are also midcentury ranch-style homes. Prices range from $140,000 to $300,000, depending on property size and condition. Split-levels and bi-levels built in the 1950s to 1990s are also common in the area. These properties cost around $275,000 to $400,000. Attached townhouses are rare to find on the market. One unit sold for about $200,000 in August of 2025.
Staying active in parks, on Goodview Lake and the Mississippi River
Several parks are scattered throughout Goodview. Michael LaCanne Memorial Park is one of the more popular ones, with a large sandy beach for swimming along Goodview Lake. There’s a fishing pier on the water and a public boat launch, though only electric motors are allowed. The park also has a playground, two soccer fields, a basketball court and a paved walking path. Woodhaven Park and WE Valley Park are both neighborhood green spaces with a playground and baseball or softball field. Goodview Park has courts for tennis and volleyball.
Goodview’s proximity to the Mississippi River provides more opportunities for water recreation. In addition to the barges that travel through, boating, tubing, kayaking and ice fishing are allowed. Prairie Island Park is located along the river and also has a sandy beach with a boat launch. A hiking and biking trail explores the area, and there’s a dog park. Prairie Island Campground is in the same area and hosts a campfire concert series and food truck events during the summer season.
Retail and dining between Goodview and Winona
Commerce is limited in Goodview. “There’s some manufacturing, and a handful of restaurants, but we don‘t really have a downtown,” Loos says. A small commercial strip along Sixth Street includes a canoe store and local eateries like Rocco’s Pub & Pizza. Anacabe’s Little Kitchen is a breakfast restaurant, and Penguin Zesto is an ice cream shop. “When people go to have dinner, they typically leave to go to Winona," Loos says. "It’s just so close, and there’s really no difference between the two cities.”
Downtown Winona is about 4 miles east and has dozens of locally owned restaurants like Nosh Street Kitchen. There are also gift shops, novelty shops and an antique store. Hy-Vee is a grocery store located in the Westgate Shopping Center. Farther east, past Lake Winona, there’s a Walmart Supercenter and several other name-brand retailers like Target and Menards. Fast-food options in the area include Jimmy John's and Dairy Queen.
Getting educated at Winona public schools
Goodview is served by the Winona Area Public School District, which offers open enrollment. Goodview Elementary earns a B-minus grade from Niche. From there, students can attend the C-plus-rated Winona Middle School, which houses the Rios Spanish Immersion Program. Winona Senior High School receives a B-minus and has a Health & Science Academy for students interested in STEM-oriented fields.
Navigating around Goodview by bike, bus or car
Goodview’s wide streets are cyclist-friendly. “There are a lot of people who ride bikes in town. It’s a big biking community,” Loos says. For public transportation, the Winona Transit Service has bus routes through the area. U.S. Route 61 travels east and west and merges with U.S. Route 14 in Winona. U.S. 61 operates as the city’s main thoroughfare and can also be used to reach Minneapolis. While the Winona Municipal Airport is located in Goodview, travelers use the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, roughly 115 miles away, for commercial flights.
Celebrating community events throughout the year
Multiple annual events keep Goodview’s community close. Goodview Days is a weekend-long festival in August that has everything from a parade to a football tournament and fireworks show. The city will also occasionally host movie nights in Memorial Park. In December, the Holiday Lights Parade kicks off the holiday season, with local businesses passing out candy to kids.
