Water lovers settle down in Grand Island

In between Buffalo and Niagara Falls and tucked away from the sounds of the city is Grand Island in Erie County. Cocooned by the Niagara River, as the summer comes, Grand Island buzzes with tourists flocking to the towns' nature preserves, campsites and amusement parks. With Niagara Falls in its backyard, residents live a water-centric lifestyle, with boating, jet-skiing and fishing being staple activities. Though this island town draws many visitors, permanent residents know it as a quiet area with little to do other than spend time outdoors. “It's a quaint small town with a very slow pace of life,” says Michael Carr, owner of Village Inn, a long-standing eatery on the island.

Soak up the sun at Buckhorn Island State Park

On its Southern end is Beaver Island State Park, with its upper portion comprising Buckhorn Island State Park and the residential areas in the spaces between. Buck Horn Island State Park unfolds into thick marshes and low-lying wetlands, accompanied by trails with migratory waterfowl and native Northern Harriers. Beaver Island State Park, on the other hand, is surrounded by towering Oaks, offering sandy beaches for swimming, marinas and an 18-hole golf course. Veterans Park is home to the Grand Island Little League and is adjacent to the Grand Island Memorial Library.

Island homes that embrace nature

A community dotted with cul-de-sacs and shrouded by trees, Grand Island is blanketed with expansive acreage. Some neighborhoods are slices of suburbia with white Colonials, Cape Cods and Split Levels with attached garages, sidewalks and driveways. Beach cottages are found on elevated, grassy knolls with water views. However, many residents make sure to have flood insurance. Other areas have larger, contemporary homes reflecting Tudor and Neo-traditional styles. Nature is embraced here with houses accentuated with front porches and some with private marinas, where fishing and boating are within seconds from doorsteps. Prices may range from $220,000 for a modest-sized three-bedroom to over $600,000 as the town’s waterside stays are some of the most desirable on the isle.

Meet the neighbors at The Village Inn

While big box stores aren’t found, Tops Friendly Market is on Grand Island Boulevard to re-up on essentials. And little island shops keep neighbors coming for the arranged blossoms at Flower A Day and the antique furnishings of Stella’s Vintage Finds. There isn’t a ton of nightlife, but residents can grab a bite at Dick and Jenny’s, bringing the flavors of Nola to the north with Creole-style deviled eggs, crawfish and jambalaya. The Village Inn plates up home-style comforts like roast beef sandwiches, pasta and fresh seafood along the banks of the Niagara River. “We are right next to Beaver Island State Park and a few marinas; you’re always bound to run into someone you know," says Carr.

Tuesday's are for music in Grand Island

Niagara Amusement Park and Splash World are summertime favorites, where screams from the wooden Silver Comet Roller Coaster are heard among visitors floating in the lazy river. For camping, the KOA campsite is right next door. Grand Island Fun Center is a go-to go-karting. Grand Islanders jam out to live music during the Tuesday Night Concert Series at Town Plaza and show their pride during the Independence Day Parade that marches down Grand Island Boulevard. Outdoorsy residents gather at the annual Paddles Up Niagara, where locals embark on hikes and learn how to kayak.

Two bridges lede Grand Islanders to and fro

Interstate 190 bisects the island, connecting to two vital bridges, which lead to New York and Canada, though commuters note the prevalence of tolls. The North Grand Island Bridge leads residents to the rushing cascades of Niagara Falls, about 7 miles away and The South Grand Island Bridge to the Queen City of Buffalo, just 20 miles from Downtown. The island is also 7 miles south of Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center and 9 miles from Niagara Falls International Airport.
